Unless your stove was enamelled, it would have been painted at the factory with a very similar paint to what I listed. I have a 1 gal soup pot on my stove 24/7 and no mark on the stove, so don't know how they managed that... Worsth thing with a wood stove is letting it run away by not paying attention. You should get the internals checked out. If it is an EPA certified stove they run very hot indeed and you could have damaged firebrick, burn tubes etc. Definitely get it inspected by someone competent.

For the exterior rust use a sander or wire wheel till it's shiny. Wear goggles. Apply naval jelly sourced at hardware stores. When dry wire wheel or sand till shiny again and again apply naval jelly. When dry Sand, wire wheel and paint with the high temp stove paint.

The naval jelly contains phosphoric acid which converts the rust into ?? Which is stable. It will get into the microscopic inter granular rust that you cannot see so the piece will not continue rusting.:thumbsup:

Wirebrush/ sand then hit it with some high heat rustoleum. Or for a better finish, buy some of the POR "Velvet Black" high heat paint.

IMO...the rust indicates that the roof may be leaking around the flue pipe penetration...that is what I would address first...

Thanks everybody for the input and after today I could care less about the decided to let the bank have it just trying to save a $2500 wood stove.

Scott I get a little rust on the wood stove at our cabin that sits empty most of year these days. Not as bad as what you show. Like others I would try to clean up the loose rust first. I use a product called stove black that you can find at some hardware or wood stove stores. It is more like a black tinted wax that bakes into the surface and has worked really well for me.
