Hello everybody, I am currently stationed overseas and my wife went to visit our house in West Virginia and low and behold it is a wreck. I let a "friend" live there for free and there is a lot of out of whack but the wood stove in the house is covered in rust!! The sides of the wood stove looks great but the top is covered in rust. The wood stove is a Harman and not a cheap stove, What can I do to fix the rust without painting or anything like that, also keep in mind that my wife will be the one working on it. Thank you very much in advance. Scott

How bad is the rust? I realise that it may be difficult to post pictures, but that would be a big help if possible.

I believe the stove is painted, can't see why a stove wouldn't be painted.

I'd wire brush any loose rust and then spray it with Rustoleum Rust Reformer. This paint is a combo of primer plus a chemical that changes the rust (iron oxide) to (a black) iron sulphide.

Wire brushing, followed by proper stove paint. Then when running it for the first time, you will need a lot of ventilation as the paint gives off fumes and smoke. But the heat fully cures it so it should look great for a while.

From the looks of it rain was coming down the stovepipe and getting onto the stove. There is a chimney cap / flashing / rail collar problem up on the roof for sure. Might want to fix that too.

Here is just 1 suitable type of paint. They will all say something similar.

I think they had a kettle on the stove and that's what did it. The roof and chimney is good the roof and stuff was replaced in June 2012.

Unless your stove was enamelled, it would have been painted at the factory with a very similar paint to what I listed. I have a 1 gal soup pot on my stove 24/7 and no mark on the stove, so don't know how they managed that... Worsth thing with a wood stove is letting it run away by not paying attention. You should get the internals checked out. If it is an EPA certified stove they run very hot indeed and you could have damaged firebrick, burn tubes etc. Definitely get it inspected by someone competent.

X2 on getting it looked at, especially since you aren't there in person.

For the exterior rust use a sander or wire wheel till it's shiny. Wear goggles. Apply naval jelly sourced at hardware stores. When dry wire wheel or sand till shiny again and again apply naval jelly. When dry Sand, wire wheel and paint with the high temp stove paint.

The naval jelly contains phosphoric acid which converts the rust into ?? Which is stable. It will get into the microscopic inter granular rust that you cannot see so the piece will not continue rusting.

Wirebrush/ sand then hit it with some high heat rustoleum. Or for a better finish, buy some of the POR "Velvet Black" high heat paint.

IMO...the rust indicates that the roof may be leaking around the flue pipe penetration...that is what I would address first...

Scott I get a little rust on the wood stove at our cabin that sits empty most of year these days. Not as bad as what you show. Like others I would try to clean up the loose rust first. I use a product called stove black that you can find at some hardware or wood stove stores. It is more like a black tinted wax that bakes into the surface and has worked really well for me. Lowes sells it according to the web. Here is an article that may help. How to Blacken a Wood Burning Stove | Home Guides | SF Gate
Stay safe over there.
