Yeah, if any of the safety concerns are not met it just flat will not turn over.  It was turning over fine, and like I said, it was even turning over faster than it would on starter alone; like it was firing just a little bit but not enough to stay running.  Kinda how a flooded gas engine acts as ya start to clear it.  Never heard of it before, but can a diesel engine flood?  After a couple hours it just started like there never was a problem.
