Safely transporting a pet

I used to regularly pass a guy going the opposite direction on my way to work. He always had the passenger window rolled down enough for his dog to stick its head out the window.

Even in freezing cold weather, he was all bundled up, so the dog could be happy.

I know it's not you but I am just throwing it out there, cold temp and open window at heigh speed is a recipe for a hear infection, not for the guy but the the dog, it need to be pretty warm (at least above 60) for it to be safe for him.

On that note, every evening around the same time, a guy that lives a few houses up the road from us takes his two dogs for a ride with the windows down

We had a guy (don't know where he lived) that would do the same thing. He would drive by slowly (20-25 mph) with a beagle head hanging out the window, he would turn around at a wide spot in the road and go back. Every day at about the same time. Have not seen him doing it since late last summer.

You beat me to it. Ruger used to like to have his nose out the window until we got up to about 45, then didn't like it.


When he was younger I used to put him in the back of my truck and drive the road adjacent to my property at about 15mph with the tailgate down, just to get him used to staying in the back.

We had a Cairn Terrier that always wanted to stick his head out the window. We were always worried he's fall or jump out because he got so excited seeing cows, horses, other dogs, etc... so we'd just crack the window open about 1/2". He'd stand on the arm rest and snort away, slobbering up the glass, stopping to sneeze every couple miles, then continue.

Ruger was a bloodthirsty showed his hunting instincts, and would get excited as soon as I picked a gun up. One day when I was out chasing a bird he got excited and started jumping up and down on the arm rest... closing the power window. After that I shut off the control on his door.

One of our kids was driving from OK to visit us. They had one large dog in a crate, another large dog sitting in a seat (he's a good traveler), and two cats loose in the car. One of the cats stood on the arm rest and rolled down the power window. Kid reached back and managed to scruff the cat while husband pulled over. Cat would have been a goner.

My lab figured out how to lower her window very quickly but she can't close it ... good thing for the baby proof option because she leaves pressure on enabling me to close it we are fighting for the control like if it be a child lol, when I ride in town I unlock it to let her open it but on the hwy I make sure its lock.
