sales figures

A quick Google search revealed that in 2005 Kubota hit the 1 million units sold milestone, and reached 1.5 million last year--sold by Messicks (congrats to Messicks--that's pretty cool). I was never good at math but the interim years average about 83,000 units/yr.

How they are defining "unit" I dunno.

I dont think you could afford to buy a tractor from a dealer as big as you'd like. Their overhead would be huge. To have that many tractors would be crazy on one lot. Tractors don't sell as fast as cars so you cant really run the business the same way. Then you'll also have salesman pushing their favorite tractor so some brands would just sit there taking up space and money. I cant imagine having more then two brands on one lot. Basically one brand that compliments the other. Kubota doesn't have any implements so selling along side new holland helps the dealer sell nh implements to kubota customers and kubota compact/utility tractors to larger farms.

Thanks for awnsering my questions. I have a friend that sold motorcycles and he tried to get Honda as a Franchise. The expense would have broke him. That is why I had these questions.

Neil, thanks for the response. Mahindra builds Jeeps, Navistar Trucks, SUV's, pickups, and I think they are even into airplanes now. So "units" is just too vague. Best to stay with Tractors only, since those were the "units" you started the post with. If Kubota is tight with the numbers, then it's probably best to just say you have no idea. When you quote numbers for Kubota only that are higher than the total market for all brands, I just can't let it rest.

I am envious of the Kubota construction line. That is some cool stuff.

Come out to Northern California sometime and I'll buy you dinner, and I'll give you a tour of our facility. Currently we have well over 300 Mahindras on the lot, with about 200 Max's coming in the last week of this month.

I hope you have a prosperous spring.

Not a bad idea figuring this way. If Kubota does 80,000 tractors a year worldwide, then Mahindra outsells them about 3:1 worldwide. But to most of us, we aren't viewing the world, we are just viewing our local areas. And Kubota has done quite a good job in the USA. As I have said often, there is much to admire about Kubota.

It's not hard to understand why sales figures would be important to a dealer, but why would they matter to a consumer? Sure, they are an indicator of the success of a brand, but I think overall design and customer satisfaction are far more important to consumers.

Otherwise, debating sales figures is much like comparing the size of one's... equipment.

That 1.5 mil number is for the US, not global. The US accounts for well under half of their sales.

Yea, it was our tractor. The president flew out to take pictures with us and the customer.

I'd concure that 80,000+ for the US sounds about right, thats 35-40% of the total product line sales.

One good thing to mention is BOTH these companies are adding jobs here. Mahindra is ramping up final assembly and distribution and Kubota is increasing their manufacturing in Ga.
We're all tractor guys and I think secretly us RED owners look at the ORANGE tractors and see some things we like and those ORANGE owners do the same!

Those are impressive numbers. That's a huge market share to be proud of. Keep up the good work.
