SALES TAX RANT

I was just thinking that the 4% sounds like a bargain to me.

Me too. Worse yet in Maine I'd be writing another $2xxx check a year later for annual excise tax on a $60K new vehicle.

Sounds like a bargain to me too. Sales tax is 8% here and each time anything is re-sold the buyer pays 8% again on what it sold for. No maximum, so on a $60K truck the buyer would pay $4800 tax plus tags and insurance.

Here in Ont. Canada we pay 13% on autos & 8% on almost everything else, never heard of personal property tax or annual excise tax unless you are talking about taxes on your home or land, hope nobody in our provincial government is reading this or it will put ideas in there greedy heads.

In Tennessee it would be $4280 +tags and ins. so $300 would be a bargain to me. Also every time that truck was resold the new owner pays tax on the sale price again and again.

Nobody likes to pay tax me included but roads are how we get around. Personal property tax is another tax but one that goes to the locality for them to spend. Kinda of like a use tax, for the use of my house car tractor boat if I had one. I'm being funny here

That's the way Va works as well

I can honestly say every penny of our annual excise tax (it's really a road maintenance tax) goes to our local town roads--and it still isn't enough. We pay that excise tax on the first year too. If I buy a new car, it's 5.5% sales tax to the state plus the excise tax to the town when registering a new vehicle. The excise tax declines with the value of the vehicle. Our 2007 Explorer Sport Trac is $140/year now for example.

We have city streets but all others are maintained by V-Dot unless private. Cannot remember about towns

NH has high registration fees but NO sales to income tax.

If you want lots of social programs then you gotta be willing to pay for them.
