Here in MD they pay landscapers to landscape along the interstates and intersections. This state wastes more money than they have and keep crying they need more to upkeep the roads. And then there is the 2 or 3 state vehicles with state employees that have to sit there and watch to make sure the taxpayers are getting their moneys worth.

I paid $1000 for tax, license, and title for a $12,500 car here in Illinois. We pay a 19 cent per gallon plus 7.35% for gasoline. The state is hurting since gas prices are dropping.

WOW ! I had no idea how lucky I am to just have paid the $2400. Yes, we do have very nice roads here in VA. I just got back from some business trips to Pa. Drove a lot of miles, and couldn't believe the poor condition of the roads there. I've got farm roads that ride nicer. I shall now count my blessings... and quite griping, I actually do love Virginia.

That's right, close your eyes and click your heels and keep saying "There's no place like home.":D

They either get you when you initially buy a vehicle or they'll get you with property taxes. Case in point, friend of mine bought a used 2011 Chevrolet Colorado crew cab 2wd with 68,000 miles on it. His tax bill came and he owes $544 on a 4 year old truck. That's outrageous! I'm wondering how bad my 2014 z71 taxes will be. I'm guessing $800-850. That'll be due a month after I just paid $1300 in property taxes for land. Sorry, but I could spend that $2100 better then the government.

Exactly, I have no say on how MY money is spent. They just TOOK it.

OK. Bought myself a new truck for the first time since moving to Virginia two years ago. Previously, in South Carolina it was a $300.00 set fee, no problem. BUT, here in Va it is 4% of sale price. Short story, came to $2,400.00. I almost fell off the chair. Dealer apologized profusely, but what could he do? This is above and beyond the title, registration fees, and the personal property tax I have to pay every year on the truck as long as I own it. My question is, who gets that money, and what do I get out of it ? I'm pretty sure I just took one in the shorts. What a rip off...

Well, come to Indiana and you'll need two pairs of shorts.... 7% sales tax. In Hoosiers' eyes, you got a good deal!

The highway system in our country is failing short and simple. Increasing taxes is about the only way to fix it unpopular yes but I see no other way.

Texas, at least in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, has a different way to fix it; toll roads. And the latest thing (I-35E from Dallas to the north side of Denton) is to get a foreign company to help finance construction, build some free lanes and some toll lanes, and let the organization that provided part of the funding collect the tolls for 50 years. This project was/is planned to be a 4 year project and we're just now into the second year of widening about 30 miles of I-35E. Actually, I don't expect them to complete the project in 4 years or even in my lifetime.

I live in N.Y. were you are charge tax per county. My tax is 8.125% one time tax on a new or use. Now if your trade in your truck or car let's say it worth $15,000 you don't pay tax on the trade price deducted from the new price of lets say $40,000 - $15,000 = $25,000 = 8.125% = $2031.25 tax. so you save the $1218.75 tax because you paid it before on the trade.
Look it is what it is. If you like that state you live in you have to go with the flow.

This. I can't imagine letting things like tax rates dictate where I live. So many other factors are more important, to me at least.
