SALES TAX RANT

Nobody likes to pay tax me included but roads are how we get around. Personal property tax is another tax but one that goes to the locality for them to spend. Kinda of like a use tax, for the use of my house car tractor boat if I had one. I'm being funny here

We also pay a use tax on top of the registration fee.

To the original poster, quit complaining, you're fortunate. In IN it is 7% plus excise tax on plates. You have no way to get out of it.

I've always been hit with sales tax in every state I lived in, but VA seems to be the lowest. Be lucky it wasn't worse!

What I don't understand is where is all the money for road maintenance going if they keep coming up short every year? Does it cost that much to do a bad patchwork job on a pothole? Is it because they think they need brand new $75000 tractors to mow the side of the road and get rid of them in 3 years? Is it because of all the brand new f-250's the foremans ride around in watching the workers work? We don't need more taxes, we need more responsible spending.

When I bought my 04 Silverado they had a $5000. rebate. The state charged me sales tax on the full amount!
I called the state to complain and was told "You spent the money, you owe the tax. If they want to give some of the money back that's up to them".

A lot of our road funds go to winter maintenance. There is a mini-hill of salted sand out behind town hall every fall. We have two dump trucks equipped for snow plowing and sanding. Town has a CAT 416 TLB, an old 1-ton with a dump body, and maybe a front-end loader. Not sure about the loader. Those aren't cheap items to buy or run. The trucks especially take a beating plowing. We don't mow roadsides here except the interstate highways.

The vehicle excise tax generated from 950 residents ain't enough. There has been talk of trying to consolidate some of these things with other towns but rural New Englanders don't like to give up local control and don't trust that to be any cheaper anyways.

Edit: I should add that deaths exceeded births in 2013 here in Maine.

I seem to recall that Va at least used to refuse to allow uncle sam to put their controlling paws on Va highways, so the people in VA had to foot that bill, in order to keep control of the highways. Don't know how true it was, but I do know VA used to have some nice Interstates, outside of towns.

The highway system in our country is failing short and simple. Increasing taxes is about the only way to fix it unpopular yes but I see no other way. Bridges are close to catastrophe failure in all areas of our country. Yes we need better controls over the way our money is spent but the savings would only make a dent in what is needed. Partisan ship needs to be put aside or I fear catastrophe damage will occur with loss of life inevitable
