Salesman changed sale price!!!!!

I was not that happy with my local dealer and ended up getting a new unit from Oregon; this was over two years ago. Haven't regretted it at all. This dealer, Superior Tractor, has looked after me well, I'm in British Columbia. Find another dealer even if they are in another province or the USA. I was in sales for most of the last 12 years and used to give people my home phone number, never had a nasty call, happens when you tell the truth and are honest. If the dealers are 3 hour drive away then getting local service should not be an issue anyway. Once when I needed work done on my backhoe I just used a local tractor mechanic, was fully paid under warranty.

Hi guys,

I just got off the phone with the owner of the dealership. He wont do anything except apologize for his employees "mistake" on the quote.

I will be looking elsewhere for sure. Actually the owner was very defensive of his salesman and was one notch away from being rude to me even though I have everything in written form. I do have a call in to Tony Brown National Sales Rep for Kioti. He most likely wont call me back but I would like a chance to explain to him what happened. The owner even recommended I go back to the Mahindra guy and continue on with my other deal.

I am done with this for now but if Tony Brown does give me a call I will post what he has to say.

Thanks everyone for letting me vent and also for the ideas to move on with a different dealer and so forth.

Thanks,
Richard

I got an email quote from a Kioti dealer for a DK45SE with cab and loader via an email. I contacted the salesman and told him we had a deal. We discussed everything in detail that was in the email and I asked again if everything was correct to which he replied "Yes sir". I said ok we have a deal but I want to be honest with you I made a deal with a Mahindra guy on Monday so I need to let him know I have decided to buy this Kioti. The salesman then asked what the deal was so I told him. My mistake!!!
I called the Mahindra guy and told him I was buying the Kioti which did not make him very happy to say the least.
About 10 minutes later the Kioti saleman called me and said "I made a mistake on the quote and now here is the real price". He raised the price close to the same amount I was willing to spend on the Mahindra. I will attach the email for the original quote if I can.

Hi Richard

Kioti called and we can get one in about two weeks

DK45SE gear w/loader and cab $24,625.43

And I called around for yours -- $10,000.00

Thanks again for the Opportunity to quote

Your needs

Any ideas on how to hold this salesman to his first quote?
I am mad as #ELL!!!!!!!

Yes,
Just QUIETLY ignore him, don't tell him why, just don't go back.
IF he calls you a few weeks later with a lower quote just tell him "no deal".

This is all assuming that you wouldn't have originally paid what he is now asking.

If you would have, well I guess you bet wrong when trying to play one dealer against another.
They may compete against each other for sales in the daytime, but I'd bet they share info and beers after hours.
They KNOW who is tire kicking and just price shopping in their area, they KNOW who is serious too.

This is a very frustrating situation, I have had the same thing happen to me on a car purchase a few years ago. I cannot justify the Kioti salesman, but, for what it is worth, I bet the specific machine he quoted you at that price got sold from under him and he had to scramble to find another one and it was more $. He still should have stuck to his original quote. Ken Sweet

I have never sold tractors or farm equipment. But I did sell cars for many years. I never gave a person a written price on any vehicle I had in stock. Here is the reason why. With a printed price you gave your competition an open door to beat your deal. Some dealers were,(are), so hungry they will sell their product at and maybe even under cost. (You never want to have your dealer sell you at below cost because he will go out of business and you need him,) Many buyers never consider what they get after the sale such as service and help solving problems. When they are buying new all they are considering is price for the new vehicle or tractor. I always told the buyer shop around, keep in mind my dealership reputation, years in the business and etc. then bring me your best price I will beat if I can. Folks that might sound crazy but in the 1970痴 I made over $40,000 per year selling. I never low-balled a person, which seems to be what the Koiti dealer did. The Philosophy behind low-balling a price is you go to the Mahindra dealer and tell them they are X dollars too high. They tell you no the price i gave you was really good. Kioto can稚 beat my price for a like equipped tractor. You say well I can beat the price. The when you are told the real price from the Kioti dealer you are shocked and tell the Kioti dealer that is too high, Mahindra said such and such. The Kioto dealer then days I made a mistake and I am sorry but let痴 see what we can do. Believing all the time you will give him a few hundred dollars more than Mahindra because you want to save face. It is not easy to go back to Mahindra and say, 展ell I feel like a fool, I can't get the tractor at X price will you still sell me yours for X?
Folks it is just a game. That is why I got out of the business. I have always said very few dealers tell the truth. Case in point; ask a dealer the best price they will take. If they are honest they will give you their best price from the get go. But few do. Even after they tell you their best price the normally negotiate down some more. If they told you the best price there would be no room to negotiate. Now if you have a trade this is different because no one can put an exact price on a trade-in.

If I were selling tractors in your area, even though you are three hours from me. I would determine how ready you are to buying, and then see if you could buy, (the old would you, could, you and if you sales style without the if you part, by the way is still used today to qualify buyers from lookers.), and then come to you with a model tractor I think you want. I would sell you on my service and willingness to serve you. This would get the deal quicker than being the lowest price. What will it cost me to bring the tractor to you one day? A good dealer always starts out with the list and then say I will do all I can to make you a deal. Let痴 consider what it will cost the dealer/salesman to bring the tractor to you? Let痴 consider you live 150 mile away. I would put one day in @ let痴 say $100.00 per day salary, 150 mikes at $1.50 per mile or $225.00 so I have invested $325.00. If I am not going to make that much or more in parts sales I have a very big hole in my operations. So I have made nothing until I sell you a tractor. Many dealers today only sell price. Where they need to sell product and service. I have a friend who sold Chryslers in the 1970痴. About half of his cars he sold for list price. Why because Mrs. Jones knew if it wouldn稚 start on a cold morning all she needed to do was call the dealership and a person would be at her car in a matter of minutes.

Just my two cents.

It is very frustrating for me to listen to salesmen. They do this for a living and I never seem to get what they are saying until it is written down for me to look at. Every salesmen I spoke with during this tractor search has changed their stories at some point.

IMHO ... I consider everything a salesman says is a lie until you have it in writing.

Man people these days LIE. I don't know what happened, but they do.

I started out every inquiry the same "I am going to but a tractor and I spend my money wisely so PLEASE just tell me your best price out the door no surprises and I will either say yes or no". I got surprises from ALL of them like tire fees or dealer prep charges ect.

This is their way of:

1) dampening the sticker shock
2) preliminarily sounding like they're meeting or beating another brand's/ dealer's price
3) buying time to be able to keep talking to you, muddying the waters/ issues ... breaking you down, wearing you out, to where hopefully you'll get tired of it & just buy it.

It's their standard game, & the only reason it should bother you is that it wastes some of your time.

If you could quickly & easily know the current out-the-door price of a particular JD & a particular NH, there'd be a lot less for the sales guys to try to wrangle out of you. You'd walk in, ask, get your answer, & probably leave.

Also IMHO ... I do not care what amounts they want to put on different line items like $100 "doc fees", or whatever .. Just look at the out-the-door price once you have it in writing. Ignore everything else.

For a $20,000 tractor purchase, if they want to say the tractor is $3,000 & the dealer prep charges are $17,000, why should I care? It's a good story to tell your buddies later, but it doesn't actually affect the deal.

Hey, they can even add in a $1,000 "cat scan" fee if they want, & if their overall out-the-door price is the best deal, I'd buy it.

You are a veteran member here so you have been around awhile.

I ask this with total respect can you give me some ideas on how to buy a tractor? I was honest upfront with every salesman I spoke with I thought. I told them all I WAS buying a tractor and I WAS buying where I got the best price. How is that tire kicking, and how much more serious could I have been. What is wrong with price shopping?

I never played one dealer against the other. I am sure they never spoke to each other. I had made up my mind on either a Kioti or a Mahindra depending on price and distance from me. I read on this site for several days getting some ideas of what was available and what people liked or disliked.

I was given a written quote in an email (which I posted)then when the Kioti salesman found out I was going to spend more money at the Mahindra dealer Mr. Kioti upped his price. I dont think I am the bad guy in any part of this! Read my first post.

I await your reply,
Richard
