junkman, im not sure if the real reason for oil testing is just to extend the oil change cycles, i know a construction company i worked for used to send out oil samples for there newer machines and bigger machines, why, just to get an idea of whats going on inside the engine, if an engine that has always tested fine all the sudden starts showing high, metal, dirt, antifreeze etc then something needs to be looked into hopefully before the whole engine is toast, or it means its time to to do a rebuild, oil sampling isnt just for oil life analasis

Well first it should not cost $25 for an oil test. I used that price as a MAX as I noted. Based on Rotella POA and esters you should be able to go longer then that be that is me; unless you engine burns bad.

Next, Rotella is not the oil I would choose if given other oils but leTs play the game. There are better oils for the same price.

1. So you do (2) oil and filters changes per year ($51) here. Also note you know ZERO on how the engine is running (performance wise)

2. You do one oil test for lets select and avg. $$$, so $18.5 it is.

3. So now you have $69.5 for 2-oil and filters and (1) oil test for 100 hours, 1-year

4. Next lets say, as you stated, you can go 75 hours on one oil change per oil change.

5. Using that data, you are not doing 2-changes per year but 1-oil and filter every 7 months. So after 1.5 years your cost would be $140 IF you did 2 oil tests aong with 2-oil and filters.

6. Now after the second test you do not do them all the time. You only did 2 to see how your baseline compared. Once you get a trend that is your pattern.

7. After the 1.5 years you do some basic math and that is it. If you are using a good oil, it still should be good. You do not need to test anymore since you have your baseline.

Note: oil tests is not only to see the oil but to see how the engine is running. It is more then testing the oil. How about monitoring the engine performance, as I noted above.

8. After 1.5 year it will be $51 for 18 months of oil and filters (or 2-oil and filters). Using oil testing method along with less wasted oil & filters, less time messing with oil and the same protection.

9. Using your old theory it would be $76.50 for 18-months laong with more usd oil, filters, etc.

As I noted if you are doing oil testing only for lengthening you oil duration, something is very wrong. Oil tests are priceless. You can see problems well in advance using this procedure.

Also note that if you use a top of the line synthetic oil, you can go longer with the same protection.

Could you please list the oils that cost the same as Rotella Synthetic that are better, and if you know where they can be purchased? thanks..

I installed a Fumoto drain valve found here at my last oil change. If one were to test their oil, it seems like a relatively clean way to do it. I purchased it to make my oil changes easier and neater. With a regular oil pan bolt, I usually end up with oil everywhere. Not too good if one is doing it on their nice clean concrete floor.

Anyway, the valve was very well made, and I don't see any way that it could open unexpectedly. I had the valve within a week of ordering it. The style I got was the one with a nipple, to allow attachement of a hose to direct oil flow.

I would need two of them suckers for my TC-40D and I could just about bet that I would rip em both off the first trip through the woods. I better settle for conventional drain plugs.

Looks like a good item for a car, but on a tractor that goes off road and over hill and dale, I don't think that I would want to gamble my engine with it. If you do rip it out, then you have one mess to clean up and you will have the oil pan repair to deal with also. Thanks for the link..... I think that I will try one for my car. Junk...

Yes, I guess I should have said I got it for my truck. I don't think I'd want one on my tractor, the bolt is too exposed for the kind of stuff I do.

Well first, what are you "looking into" on savings? Up front or next 1 month? Also it is hard since in different regions of the USA have diff prices.

I do not know all the prices everywhere buy I get Amsoil for $14.23 for 1-gallon off of a business friend. He still makes $$$ since he buys only in case lots. No 6-months drains intervals here either. My BX22 oil change costs about $18.50 for 1-year! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I am going to be looking into Baldwin filters soon.

I did those with my Powerstroke diesel and it held up good. That is proof for me. I will be posting a Spring 2005 results with about 80 to 110 hours on it. 90% BH and FEL. The other 10% is mowing.

But I would pick Motorcraft , Delvac or Schaeffers for the upfront cost factor. I would have to go to the international dealer to see there Fleetguard prices. So far I think the motorcraft has the best #'s for the price. It's TBN is over 13.5! The Rotella has some extra Ca and P but the TBN about 4 points lower. So I would personally take the higher TBN over a lower one. High TBN means better "fighting power" against all kind of stuff.

So for prices on group 3 that is what I would select. If you want a better oil get a group 4 or 5. Again with a better basestock and additives you will pay more. Might pay more but you will get less wear, higher TBN, les OXD & Nit, and longer oil life.

I buy Motorcraft oil and filters exclusively.
Did you know Walmart now sells Motorcraft? /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Motorcraft oil is $1.42 per quart at the local Walmart. That's cheaper than you can get it at the Ford dealership!

After I buy my oil, I take my beautiful bride out to dinner at the Walmart snack bar. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Walmart has a snack bar? Holy cow I really am missing out on all the good things in life.
