As I was lying in bed this morning, waiting for the maid to get that first pot of coffee going, it
came to me that my garden is very like a sandcastle. Both require constant vigilance and
maintenance if they are not to return to their native states: a simple pile of sand from the castle;
just another spot of grass in my sea of grass where the garden once was. Yesterday was the first
day I had the time to work in my garden since heavy rains on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was
also the first day I would not have sunk to my shoe tops in the mud. The grass and weed
incursions since my last weekend hoeing were amazing. Grass marches in from the edges and
sends paratrooper-like raids into the middle of any area not yet occupied. I think my land harbors
mutant grasses. My lawn produces hay overnight. A while back, I asked about how to grow
grass in hot weather in a note titled Summer Grass. How foolish of me. While I worked at other
projects, grass has returned of it's own accord to all the bare areas around our new additions,
save only those spots where the brick layers thoughtfully emptied their mortar buckets, creating
little bare mountains. And I am sure my mutant grasses will penetrate even those areas with
minimal assistance from me.
