So do you offer broadband service for your surrounding neighbors?

Technically an approach that will probably stirr the industry.
But watch the financial drain on your wallet if you explore this option. Read the plan offered carefully for air time minutes.

I would try to get Speednet to come out for a test. Our local Wireless Broadband ISP, kept telling me that I wouldn't have line of site, but they finally came out for a site test and found that I had excellent signal strength (and could get up to 3 Mbps if I wanted to pay for it).

I have 768Kbps up/down over radio waves and it's excellent. Much more expensive than DSL, but since Dialup or Satellite is my only other option it's the way to go.

That being said, if I couldn't get radio, I would have gotten sattelite and dealt with the latency (from what I'm told, don't look to play games or use VPN).

Heck, I would have put a tower in like getut if I had to.

Good luck.

I have Direcway satellite internet and haven't been impressed with it. Sometimes I wonder if bringing phone service to my place and using a regular modem would have been a wiser choice.

When it's working good, it's only alright. Not near as fast as my girlfriends DSL service.

You never know when service will stop. Perfectly clear days, and it's not working. Sometimes emails wont go through and are lost. Freezup on opening web pages is fairly common.

The reall kicker is customer support is in India. They are very friendly and helpful, but you have to go through the various levels to get a person who will come up with an answer, which can take several hours in my worse case.

Eddie,

Have you checked with Horizon for wireless broadband service? I didn't find a coverage map on their website, but they do show the Motorola Canopy system as one of their partners. They might be able to provide T1 level speed for DSL pricing. At least that's what providers in Rockwall and Marble Falls are promising.

Also, Lake Country Internet claims to have wireless internet in the Tyler area.

I'm in the same boat. We live in a rural area with no hope (save a repeal of the Telecom Act of 1996) of ever getting DSL or cable. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I looked in to DirecWay a while back but the high up front price just didn't seem worth it. Since then I've been checking into WildBlue. They are supposed to be starting service this year. I think the monthly rates are high compared to wired service but no more so than other satellite or wireless providers. Maybe their equipment costs are lower.

gsganzer,

I don't know where you are from Denton, but it looks like Partnership Wireless has good coverage south, west and (soon) northwest of Denton, for $50/mo. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Bill,

Thanks for the link and information. I filled out their form for more information.

Eddie,

Good luck with your search. I have been keeping up with this industry ever since I found out there were three or four competitors in the Marble Falls area. There are different technologies involved, and each has its own strong and weak points. But like cell phones vs. land lines, wireless internet is bound to be the future, especially since they can now deliver up to 14 Mbps speed.

If anyone wants to search for wireless ISP's in their area, try this site. Look down the page for your state, then use the Edit/Find function from the menu bar to look for towns near you. All ISP's aren't listed here, but a lot of them are.
