Seems like that would swing all over as you cut it.

If you balance it like I have in the picture, sure it would swing. Just pick it up off center a bit and start cutting off the high side till you get to the tongs. Move and repeat if necessary. Point is, there's lots of ways to use a machine to lift the log to a comfortable working height and keep your chain out of the dirt.
