I scratched the rod on a Ford loader years ago. I carefully rubbed it out with emery cloth, not to stop the leak but because I was afraid the rough metal would ruin the seals.

It probably leaked a little after that but not enough that I could see with my eyes and I used it for several years before I replaced the tractor.
