Have a need to drag a few acres to break up the manure piles.
Did a search for harrowing and found a good thread on what type equipment to use.
If the scratch harrow that Tractor Supply sells is used won't the tines clog up with thatch? Then the tines would be floating on top of a layer of dead grass.
Or, does the harrow kick the thatch up above the tines and it rides off to the rear.

thanks for any input

I have a chain harrow and yes,it can become clogged with grass. How quickly it cloggs depends on the length of the dead grass blades. If short enough it may not clogg at all. I use the FEL to lift the chain harrow and remove grass. When doing this be carefull not to hit the front of tractor,it can easily swing strikeing the tractor. I think it`s how I broke a headlight assembly, never seen or heard it make the hit.

I use a flexable tine harrow and there is no clogging problem.

I pull a chain harrow behind the tractor while mowing a five acre horse pasture with a mid mount mower. This combines two tasks into one operation. The tines are down and in the most aggressive orientation. The harrow does an "OK," but not great job of spreading manure piles. Actually, it is more like "knocking down" than "spreading." The harrow collects some grass into balls, but it does not seem to affect the manure spreading, and seems to be mostly self-shedding. Wet grass is more of a problem.
