screw type log spliter

I just went to ebay and did a search for "screw type log splitter" and found auctions for just the cone and another for two 3 pt "table" style splitters.

The difference is that you hold the chainsaw by its handles and hold it away from your body. .

People are getting hit by these hand held {away from the body} chainsaws all the time. I have seen up close and personal what a hungry chainsaw can eat when it decides to "kickback". I don't care if someone is the strongest lumberjack in the world, a chainsaw can still kick their butt !!!

I know that you guys are having a bit of fun with these splitters. They certainly do not look safe, but they probably are safer than they look, with prudent caution. They are quite popular here and many are for sale on our equivalent to Ebay. I will give you a few examples for your amusement. Some are no more than a big 3 phase motor with the screw #1, but I chose especially the tractor attachment models, since this is a tractor forum. #5 is my personal favorite--you could split the tree before you cut it down.

By the way I do not have any of these and really do not plan on getting any.

Many years ago I was given a "Stickler" screw type wood splitter that bolted on the rear axle of a pick-up truck. It did work very good on long wood but I found that I had twice as much chain saw work to do by splitting it first.

As far as the danger goes there was a kill switch you were supposed to wire in the the trucks electrical system, which I didn't do. One day while splitting wood I reached for another piece to split and kind of lifted one leg off the ground for balance. My boot happened to come in contact with the screw and began to feed the sole of my boot into the screw. In a split second of extreme fear I yanked my foot away pulling the sole right off my boot before it touched my foot.

Had I taken the proper percaution the near accident would not have happened. Any splitter has the potential to be dangerous and some have more potential than others.

Wish they were more available here. I like the first one, and the one on the shaft and two pillow block bearings. Will continue looking for the screw head with some idea to make a bench model for splitting split wood into kindling when needed.

I think that I would use a hatchet, but I have hear of people smashing their fingers or chopping a part of one off too. Here is a link to the Polish site, maybe something here will give you an idea. You can search on świder or swider--that will give you lots of things like vertical drills and post hole diggers, but included in that will be these splitters. You can also look here for regular splitters and these.

Someone posted that these could be found on Ebay searching on screw splitter.

I had a gas powered screw log splitter form about 1973 to 1980. It worked fine and I never thought it was dangerous. Like any tool, you have to use your sense. The biggest problem was that some tough wood could screw in and stall it. It should have had a reverse. I had to very carfully cut with a chain saw on the edge of the wood as near to the screw as possible and then start it again and it would split. A fat log could go to the end of the screw without spitting and then it would sit and turn.

When I started using more wood I sold it for a gas powered hydraulic to avoid the stalling problem. I split a lot of black locust and the screw type is not the best for that.
