Seafoam

a lil reading on morpholine and Diphenylamine

both amine esthers I believe.

morpholine I see can be used as an emulcient as well.

and WAIT.. it's listed as a SOLVENT AND A LUBRICANT??!!!??! OMG.. WTF! the sky is falling.. the sky is falling....

that's not POSSIBLE IS IT? at least according to the local close minded, 'stuck inside the box thinking' broken record.. ;) ;) :)

as bad as naptha has been talked about.. looks like it's pretty usefull.. :)

I run it in my parts washer. Most times, by the time I get carb parts to the washer, it doesn't seem to be that helpful. I always thought that some of my pre-cleaning methods had outdone it. But I think some of the volatiles escape fairly quickly through the loose fitting fused lid.

I saw a deal on a heated ultrasonic cleaner recently. I may pull the trigger on that, and then test straight naptha on an untouched Oliver 550 carb that's on my todo list now. Frequently, those carbs have a sintered opening in the bottom of the air channel that could drain fuel were the carb to flood. Frequently that sintered material is clogged completely, and it takes great effort to get the varnish and gum out of that. Naptha and ultrasonic vibration may be just the ticket.

I'll add that to the rotation...usually I try many things on some of the nasty carbs I have to do. Usually, old motorcycles are the worst, but some tractors are close, but still better due to being mostly cast, and of course the simplicity helps too.

worst carb i';ve done was the one on my allis G that had ret kote tank liner in the fuel tank that disolved ( ethanol? ) and 'flowed downthe supply tube into the carb over the winter.

entire inside of carb was packed full of semi-solid, jellied epoxourethane resin compounds.. :(

Here is the MSDS for the Amsoil Power Foam product. http://www.amsoil.com/msds/apf.pdf . It too uses naphtha for a solvent. Looks like they use morpholine for antirust.

Morpholone is a rather toxic substance. At work they insist on air supplied respitory gear, an apron and arm length gloves.
Among other characteristics , its an oxygen scavanger.

look at Diphenylamine.. it's toxic too.....

Both seem to be toxic yet both are used on fruit. As stated earlier, diphenylamine is sprayed on apples while Morpholone is used in the fruit re-waxing process. Makes me want to run to the grocery store and buy a bunch of fruit!

While looking around at some of this stuff, I did however find something of interest. It seems this guy has went pretty deep into making his own seafoam-like stuff. Note the use of diesel fuel in place of pale oil.

maybee he found it cheper to use diesel than mineral oil.

when i looked into making my own seafoam and buying isopropyl and mineral oil by the gallon.. i found that alcohol was actually cheaper by the pint from walmart :( and mineral oil was expensive from both the drug store and feed store in the gallon quantities.

when i was looking up the range of hydrocarbons that qualify as naptha.. gasoline, and fuel oils are not far off...

I have used Seafoam many times with good results. It is not crap. Is it the best? I don't know..I'd like the best. I will be on the lookout for Amsoil foam, not above trying it, but Seafoam is not crap, and has been a useful product for me.

I am not one of those folks who could have done just as well draining water out of the bowl. I have rebuilt several carbs a year since childhood, and it is my goal not to have to go into one, since it is my nature to be far too meticulous about work of that type. If Seafoam can bale me out of some of that, and sometimes it really can, I am in favor of it.

There is no use to run down a product just because you think you know of a better one. We know Seafoam is not crap. I for one am all ears to hear all of the better alternatives, but discrediting what I know to have been helpful to me is a bad way to start. I'd rather hear why Amsoil is better.

Okay. I will post this simple. Seafoam is crap since water can do the same effect/cleaning on instakes/TB for 1/20 the price. Throw in Amsoil PF and more cleaning of intake etc for less money.

I will never buy seafoam again. If you like it great. I use to pimp it until I tried other roads..
