Come to think of it, what do you do with all that oil after your done, store it for next year?

When I lived down in the country, I burned it, sometimes on brush piles I was burning, sometimes on garbage in a burn barrel. But in town, our garbage is picked up by Waste Management and I even went in person to talk to them and they said to just put it in the garbage to go to the landfill. Now of course, that's peanut oil, I'm not sure whether they'd want you to do that or not with other oils. In this city, we have one Saturday a year that we can take most "hazardous" waste to the city maintence facility and they take it.

As a non American, I look at the method of cooking and wonder if it is traditional to boil the turkey in oil or just a common method.

I could not stand the thought of the oil left in the turkey. Likewise I can't eat a well known southern fried chicken.

I don't know how "traditional" it is, but I never heard of frying a turkey until about 10 years ago. You might be surprised at how little oil is left in the turkey; almost none, in fact. And certainly less than in southern fried chicken. Of course I like southern fried chicken, too, but it depends on who did it. Some do a good job; some do not, so I don't know what you've had.

If you don't put too large of a bird in the fryer, and if you don't put too much oil in it - guess what - you won't start a fire. Chances are, most of the idiots in the videos probably left the instructions in the bottom of the box.

You're right, but there are a couple of other important points, too.

Too large a bird.
Too much oil.
Heat too high.
Bird not thoroughly thawed.
Bird dropped into oil too fast.

According to the allstate commercial, every year about 17 homes are set on fire from deep frying turkeys. The mistake is all too often they set up the fryer on the deck!

In all the videos, I did not see a fire extinguisher at the ready. Cooking on the deck, close to the house or in the garage is asking for trouble. Overheating the oil will cause it to self ignite, tip over is another danger. Not only is the base unstable, so is the pot sitting on the base. Splashing oil can burn you or start a fire when it comes into contact with the flame. Some of the cooking sites were cluttered and children were much too close.
Plan very, very carefully.

The Masterbuilt doesn't really appear to me to be much safer; tiny bit it any, and since he's using it indoors, I'd consider it more dangerous. It appears to me that the only advantage is maybe use less oil (not even sure of that.

The Char-Broil oilless that they call a "fryer" of course actually isn't but might result in a tasty turkey anyway. I'd like to try one of them; just not willing to spend a hundred dollars when I like what I have.

The two good features are, no open flame and the temperature can be set. Other than that, it is no better than any other counter top deep fryer.
