selector valve

I believe Scorpion and Suregrip are the same company, at least they have the same address. Have to go through a dealer and they were the ones who wanted $130 plus shipping for a stocked PN. Kind of steep
I have a roughed out shape comes out of a 2.5 x 2.5 x xx long block. I think I have a piece of 4 x 4 ceder post around someplace . I will post when I have some more detail.
On the check valve, I am hoping it is something like the double checks on the top and tilt cylinders. Takes pressure to crack it. The valve has a Cat pn and there is a CAT dealer up the road. I may stop in and see what they say.

This is weird. Scorpian and Suregrip look like different Co but they are both in Kamloops BC and the products on the web pages are almost the same. I bet one started with people who left the other. Anyway I just remembered I have some slabs of cherry 2.5 " thick perfect start for the handgrip . Maybe this weekend.

I've been thinking about this for a while now and one thing I thought about was the handle from a car's automatic transmission. Some of them have switches for overdrive and so fourth, so that may be an option.

I went to my local wreckers to have a bit of a scout around, but the problem here is they are all made to be used in the left hand, which is opposite to what I need for the tractor. You guys that drive on the wrong side of the road should be ok :p

Also the vast majority of automatic transmissions here are floor shift, where as I think the US folk tend towards column shift?

Anyway, it was just an idea.

Cheers

Well it looks like I will have plenty of time for projects. Got laid off yesterday after 44 years. Guess my turn was up. First 2 hours was a shock thinking about who was going to pick up everything I was doing. But by lunch time I figuired out it was not my problem anymore. Today I realized how much stress was involved sopving problems every day. So I went and found the block of cherry I was thinking about and laid out a grip handle. I will start munching on it as soon as I get ahead of the list of things my wife left me to do. Switches I has around 5a contacts.

It cool not having to go to work. A little scary but I am just going to slide into retirement , from being paid to work anyway. Since I have so much time on my hands ( except fot the list my wife gave me this morning) I went up to the Cat dealer and asked them what they knew about this valve we are looking at. Turns out it is an active pn used on a couple of stump grinders and cold planners. For the service guy to find any service docs he stuck in the PN and it gave him the attachments, Then in the attachment file he went back to the valve. All parts are available, I did not ask how much , He did mention that two coils are the same and one is different. What I did get interested in was the valvle schematic and operations. He printed it out for me and I scanned it and it is attached. We pretty much got it it right in the discussions here. The check valve is as I thought , just like the check on the CCM top and tilt cylinders. Keeps that particular line from leaking back through the 4 way. Releases when command pressure is applied.
So I am now thinking about which port I want to use for what , And what I would want to use that check valve line for, I think I will use the first port, priority for a set of QD for blower rotate or grader blade angle. They change all the time and maybe the force on the grader blade will leak back but one would always be watching that anyway, Then I just got a tilt cylinder with doble checks so put that on the second set of ports. Then my top cylinder has no checks so use the third port with the check to keep it from falling . The only issue here is I like to use the 4 way as foward is down implement and back is up implement and I am not sure which way the selector would work . I guess I can give that up to make the top not fall. I could make the tilt the same if it is backwards and I will just have to remember both the same. The Top and Tilt I will not use QD ,they never come off so just JIC connectors. I am still working on fittings for the valve .

Ahh I scanned the doc as 9 pages and even .zipped it is too big. I will have to rescan into 2 sections stand by.

I am not sure whether to offer condolences or congratulations.:(:D
I know you were planing to retire soon anyway, and I am sure it would have been better to go when you got ready, more like on your own terms. Hopefully this wont cut into your retirement benefits. And I hope you enjoy your retirement as much as I have mine. I took a buyout about a year ago, and have never looked back! Now any problems you solve will be your own, and I wish you the good fortune to be able to pick the "problems" you WANT to solve... like this little valve/knob project.
BTW, that should be a really nice looking knob, you may have to make matching knobs for all the other controls on your tractor.

Bob-

Thank you so much for searching this info out and sharing it. Coincidentally, my valve arrived just today- I decided to order one after seeing the quantity available drop and deciding that i wanted to be sure to get one at Surplus Center's price before the opportunity ended (if they ran out and it truly had been a surplus buy for them with restocking not available.)

My best wishes to you on your earlier-than-planned retirement. Most of the people I know who found themselves suddenly unemployed have ended up happier in their new situation than they were previously.

No Bob, you can never have too much info. If nothing else, it help us to think we know it all.:D

Seriously, I am grateful to you for finding out about the valve. That is everything anyone needs to know to adapt it to their use. My dealer quoted me $850 for the Massey FEL selector valve, switch and hoses. (installed) At $150 for this valve, plus whatever I spend for hoses and fittings, I will be way ahead money wise and will have three functions instead of two.

Thanks again, and, where did you find your switches? I wanted to use one DPDT, center off, momentary rocker switch, but that is really hard to find, so I gave up, and now DPST momentary push buttons are turning out to be pretty elusive as well. I can find spec. on manufactures web sites, but cant find a retailer with any in stock. I need switches to build my knob around.
