from now on, thread titles should auto append a suffix, "etc" or "and stuff".
Or perhaps simply "Thread drift is predicted." ;)

Small pumpkins here, but I think "n' stuff" is the correct spelling

I wonder how a self driving car would do in a parking garage?

I'll be honest, I didn't read this entire thread, so if we have already taken a left turn (pun intended) I do apologize for bringing it back to the topic.

Many people suffer from road rage, stress while driving, fear, and simply don't get enjoyment out of driving. These people would benefit greatly from self-driving cars, autopilot, enhanced driving, whatever.

I was completely against these Tesla cars, and other EVs on the market, with all their technology that I cannot work on when it fails. I saw it as expensive to repair, a hipster thing that I want nothing to do with. That was until my best friend, completely out of the blue, bought a model 3.

Mike let me drive his car about a week after receiving it. I was skeptical about this, but he was completely in love and desperately wanted me to drive it....

It was different. Nothing like I have ever experienced. It was smooth, silent, quick, and feature rich. He showed me all the 'neat' innovative things his car does. The regenerative braking is simply weird.

Then I took it through a very complex intersection on self-driving mode. I was ready to grab that steering wheel and abort this whole experience, but Mike told me to keep my hand and feet to myself. I trusted him. The car did everything perfectly though that intersection, even braking to a stop when a pedestrian jaywalked. I was hooked.

I called my wife and she came over to Mikes. We put my toddler in the car seat next to me in the back, my wife driving, Mike sitting shotgun. We did about 50mph around a traffic circle, and I havent heard my wife giggle like that since our honeymoon!

She fell in love.

Mike said that the best feature about his car is the self-driving. He used to suffer from road rage. Everyone was always in his way getting to and from work (we work together). He would always speed TO work, something I can never understand. Why would someone speed going TO work?? He no longer has that issue since self-driving takes care of his commute. Now, you do need to pay attention, somewhat. You must acknowledge you're alive and awake periodically. The road rage, is completely gone.

I currently have a similar issue with my commute, only I get stressed out over other drivers. I'm completely convinced that I am the only person who knows how to drive. I speed, I get stressed out, and while I believe I do enjoy the experience of driving, I really do not. Being stuck in traffic sucks.

So, shortly before Mike let me drive his Model 3, Daddy Elon announced the Cybertruck. I put my $100 down to get on the list.

Im interested in your complex intersection, what did the car do that made you confident about it navigating it?

I'm not saying that the tesla is a bad car. EV's have some pretty great power. I'm on the waiting list for the cybertruck as well. I'm a big fan of gofast, and I'm annoyed when I'm stuck behind someone that's slow. But self driving is a technology that has zero concern with inspiring road rage on those around it.

5 under 35 while on a road that easily runs 50-60 for miles will make you go insane. Then what about as you approach an intersection, the light turns yellow, the car in front of you comes to a complete stop, while the light is still yellow. They and you could have easily made it. And what if the light doesn't favor the way you're going, and the other light is super long. Imagine that happens every day on your daily commute.

Driving is a dynamic thing, it changes all the time, and it's not always going to operate within the speed limit. And that's just not something self driving cars are ready for yet. They need to analyze the length of the road, how far ahead it can see, the possibility for objects to appear from the side of the road and how long it has to anticipate these things. Not the speed limit.

I will recieve my cybertruck, and I will never use the self drive feature. My friend has it on his model 3 and his plaid model s, and he loves it, and when i'm in the car i have a death grip on the door handles.

...They and you could have easily made it. ....
Light turns yellow, you're supposed to stop if you can. Continue if you can't. If the guy in front of you can acknowledge a yellow light and stop before it turns red, you, being behind him, has time to stop as well. Yet you think he AND you could have made it. That shows aggressive driving.

Yellow means stop if you can, not continue if you can make it.

I wasnt confident about it! Thats why I really wanted to take control. I saw the jaywalker preparing to cross in front of us. The intersection is two arterials that come together. Each has those concrete wavy parts just before the signal. The lanes are wavy to encourage drivers to slow down before the intersection. The car in self-driving mode handled the situation perfectly.

I agree to a point. Those AROUND the self-driving car seem to be upset. But thats mostly due to the car following the rules. Please dont get me wrong, I'm absolutely all about breaking the rules! I speed too, get annoyed at slow drivers, etc. But what my friend Mike told me was that he simply doesn't care. He is care free. The car sees yellow and stops, as any driver 'should' do. That would piss me off, especially if I'm late for work! But for the driver of the Tesla, meh, water off a ducks back.

You can up the speed the self-driving makes. Maybe that has been patched, but when I drove that model 3, all the cars were doing 70+ in a 60MPH highway. I was able, with self-driving enabled, to up the speed the car was going.

I'm excited for Cybertruck. I will have the self-driving aspects. Probably wont use it all the time, as I do enjoy driving (least thats what I tell myself), but for those occasions when I really don't want to drive and be driven, its a blessing. And I won't really care about those road rage morons around me. Just my .02

You can speed the self driving up to 20 over the speed limit, with a maximum of 90mph, but only on certain highway's. At least the last time I checked.

I could maybe see it for city driving, but wouldn't really trust it for city driving either. What happens if somoene rear ends you? Or bumps you? Does it keep going? Does it know you've had an impact?

Also, I absolutely never want to be driven. I know that's not everyone, but I don't passenger anywhere, for anything. I absolutely hate it.

I went to buy cat food this evening, and there were 3 times where I was almost hit due to people just being oblivious. And maybe it's why self driving an answer. But if most people are doing it, will the government deem it unsafe for YOU to be in command of your own vehicle? Will you eventually have to turn over the reigns because everyone else is doing it? Maybe not in our lifetime, but what about our children's? Or our children's children?

Or, what if we just have people drive their car's responsibly? Make them pay attention to the road? There are options if you don't want to drive. Take a taxi, or a bus, or a train. These are all options. I don't want to drive a train, nor do i think personal train ownership should be a thing. That's for commuting. A car is for driving, for those that enjoy it.
