I wont use those pay before you pump.
May be off topic here but I have long wondered why gas pumps NEVER seem to be standardized...three miles west of me there are two Speedways, and Meijers, and a Marathon station, and the pumps at every one differ from the ones elsewhere. Speedway lost me as a customer a few years back because I got sick and tired of that (censored) "are you a speedy rewards customer" that shows up on their pumps. I also hate, repeat HATE those pay before you pump stations because I always use cash.

You wouldn't get any gas at most stations around here. I can't think of one that isn't pay first inside or with a card at the pump. The reasoning is the theft of gas was rampant if they unlocked the pumps before you payed. Paying first eliminates that. I thought I saw an open pump down in West Virginia last summer. I pumped and then went inside to pay, because it wasn't a credit card machine. The clerk told me I was supposed to pay first and gave me "the look". I went back and there was indeed a little sign on the pump. Anyhow, haven't seen a non-pay first pump in many years. Its sad, but at least where I live, its a high crime area and can't blame the owners. I blame society for letting it happen. No one wants to get involved with stopping theft even if they see it right in front of them.

I'm a big fan of self-service, particularly at gas stations. I haven't gone inside in years to pay for gas. I did pull into one station several years ago that didn't have a pay-at-the-pump option and left to go to another station. It let's me determine how long I'm gonna be there and keeps me from standing behind somebody getting a big gulp, Marlboro's in the red box and a coupla scratch-offs.

I've had a good experience with self-service checkouts at both Home Depot and Wal-Mart, and will use them when I have only a few items. I've never tried them for large orders - I'll admit I do like the option of having a cashier available.

I'm old enough to remember full-service gas stations, but in our area, full-service was always about a 10 cent premium. There is still one gas station that I'm aware of in the next town that offers full-service, but also at a premium price.

Good luck and take care.

I don't even know of a service station (well, not "service", but gas station) that isn't self serve. And I don't even know where there might be one where you cannot use a credit card at the pump. I never pay cash and I never use a debit card, so I don't mind putting my credit card in the pump first.

I had a friend that worked at a full service station back in the 70's. His boss told him to always add a quart of oil even if it didn't need it. He would have an empty oil can with the spout in it for the cars that didn't need the oil.... What a rip off.

We had a small gas station in my home town that was run by an elderly gentleman...it was a self-service by necessity; he either wasn't able or inclined to provide much service. This was in the '50's; and his station still had the old mechanical pumps with the 5 gallon glass vessels above the pumps. I would wager that very few have had the honor of pumping their own gas by hand and watching it flow out of the glass container above the pump and into the tank.
