Septic Tank

Around here anyway, it is recommended that you pump the tanks at least every two years...not 5. Considering the cost of replacing a leach field, (which can go bad if you wait to long), I'd get in the habit of every 2 instead of 5...cheap insurance.

Good pictures, BMW, and a very interesting thread. I've never seen a block built septic system or one with a lid that size and shape; I'm accustomed to round concrete tanks with small round lids, 12" or so, on access holes. And you say the "recommendation" for pumping is 5 years, someone else says 2 years, and the installers here say 7 to 10 years unless you put too much bleach or something in there to kill the microbes./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Our system needed pumping and cleaning after 4 years.

Mark,

'Cept for the Ag tires on yours and turfs on mine /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif and my FEL /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif, your tractor sure looks like mine. Who pumped out your tank, I need to do that at my place? Hasn't ever been done, place is 7 yrs old. Before anyone tells me this is bad, I am a single guy, and I bought it from a single guy, so the loading hasn't been all that bad.

Everyone Else,
Mark and I have never met IRL, but came across each other on TBN. We don't live to far from each other, and both bought L3010DT's from the same dealership (Gardiner's in Faulkner, MD, is right on 301 6 or so miles N of the Potomac River bridge), within several months of each other. It's amazing that in doing a search, we are the only 2 L3010DT owners on TBN, and both tractors were bought as a pair by our dealer.

While Disney's Jingle annoys the crap outta me, ya sometimes can't help but go, "It's a small world after all..."

Very excellent post, and superb photos BMW. Nice job indeed. I especially appreciate it, since I think one of my septic lids may need replacement. I NEVER would have considered doing it myself---until I saw your project report & photos. Thanks.

Interesting, Bird. Both septic tanks on my property have access covers closer to manhole size. You can see one of the concrete lids laying on the ground in this picture I posted a while back. The plastic risers are a little larger in diameter so's they fit around the outside of the holes in the tank.

Okay, so some of us might have to suck it in a little to fit through these "manholes", but I'm pretty sure they're closer to 2 feet in diameter.

Hmmm ... I find several dozen L3010's in the profile list, Nick. And I believe I recall several other new L3010 owners who didn't fill out their profiles, too. It's not clear how many are DT (Dual Traction = 4wd), but there are a number of them. Nice tractor in any case. That's the one I was hoping to get when budgetary concerns kicked in.

Harv, you definitely have some bigger lids (or access) than any I've seen around here. Some of the septic tanks have a single access in the center of the top of the tank (I don't like that) while others have two; one over the inlet plumbing and one over the outlet plumbing. In nearly all cases, the entire thing is then covered with dirt (supposed to be a minimum of 6"). That prevents any unsightly stuff in the yard, but you have to get the shovel to dig it up when it needs pumping (and sometimes a probe to find it). I decided I wanted the riser and a second lid (concrete instead of plastic) over the access hole on the inlet side of my first tank. And primarily, I'm still trying to learn to use a digital camera and the photo software, so I've attached a picture and we'll see how it turns out.

In another thread, there was a discussion of the different formats, which of course, I don't understand, but I've been taking pictures in the camera's normal mode (36 pictures will fit on a card) and it saves it in JPEG format. I found that I could set the camera for SHQ mode and it says TIFF on the camera menu (17 pictures on a card), but when I put the card in the Flashpath adapter and in the floppy drive and looked at it in Windows Explorer, it was a JPEG file; just a bigger file than in the past. Oh well, anyway, let's see what this picture looks like.

Looks like a pro job to me! Both the pics and the editing!! Harv, you definitely have some competition! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

BTW, what photo software did you use?

Nice pics.

I guess you could say that you gave us the poop on your digital camera/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Harv,

Yeah, there are quite a few L3010's. But all but 2 of them appear to be hst's or gst's. What, I'm /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif that not everyone has there profile complete. Hint, Hint, to those of you with limited info, fill out your profiles so the rest of us can learn more about you. I would have never known BMW had already bought my tractor's sister (Mark, sorry if you claim your's as a boy tractor) had he not filled out his profile.

Yes, it is a very nice tractor. I initially thought I wanted the L3000DT, looked at it, but after running an L2850, I thought the L3000 was a bit crude, no offense intended to the L3000 owners. I liked the grand L series, much more refined, better creature comforts. The additional cost was worth it to me for the refinements.

What I do not like about my L3010 is the turfs. On wet greasy So. Md. clay, she just dances. I can't even get out of my 'barn' and up a SMALL SHALLOW grade. It's pathetic. I like the turfs for mowing, but it would appear people get along fine with ags in this application, so I am regretting my turfs. I can't really even push myself around with the loader because that procedure sorta makes steering difficult, and in a lane, ya need to be able to steer. Once, if ever, it dries out, it will be fine, I got along great in dry/moist conditions, but wet is out of the question/w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif.

My wife's family didn't believe in regular pumping of the septic tank (or any preventive maintenance for that matter!). A couple years ago while Thanksgiving dinner was in the over, we noticed a brown geyser in the lower field. After much digging around we found the rusted out lid to a 200 gallon rusted out septic tank. Pried it up and found the thing was absolutely packed with sediment! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif It looked like hand-packed ice cream! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif No need to even try to pump that baby out, so we left the lid off and planted a tree in the fertilizer.

Then we dug about 15' closer to the house and installed a thousand gallon poly tank. Even included a riser so I could add the contributions of my four dogs. No more geysers! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
