Yikes, I take a short break and this thread exploded. Whoda thought a foul subject would creat so much interest.

Thanks for the complements on the pictures, I had to crop and resize them a couple of time to get under the 200Kb limit only to find out that the limit changed to 150Kb. I guess I need to start posting more just to stay in practice.

ejb,
Five years seems to be a good rule of thumb around here, we might have to shorten the time up when we add bathrooms and users. The first chamber was FULL but the second chamber only had water (albeit aromatic water) so the leach field should be safe.

Bird,
Thanks
Apparently, block built tanks were pretty common around here before the pre-cast tanks became readily available. The house and I assume the tank are 53 years old. That is before my time so I’m not sure. I have heard about steal septic tanks being used for a while but they are pretty bad news as you can imagine.

Hey Nick,
If you aren’t happy with theturf tires talk to the dealer; he might be willing to trade. I had them change mine from turfs to ags before it was delivered. They tried to talk me into the turfs with chains, but I wouldn’t have it. They were pretty accommodating after I made it clear what I wanted, but like I said, that was before it was delivered.

I had W T Excavation and Septic Service pump out the tank. They quoted $100 if you do the digging, which was $25 cheaper than anyone else. They’re in the phone book but I’ll email you the phone number if you want. Be prepared to play telephone tag for a week or so.

And THANKS A LOT! Now I’ll be singing that D@#~ song in my head for the rest of the day.

BobT
The lids that I made are probably overkill. The holes in the tank are about 2’ square and the old lids were 2’6" square and about 3" thick with the standard wire mesh reinforcement. Being Mr. Overkill (hey that might be a good username), I went 3’ square a full 4" thick with half inch re-bar every 6" in both directions all wired together. You may have noticed the eye bolts which have a nut and fender washer and are wire to the re-bar mesh. A 3’x3’x4" slab takes all of five 80Lb bags of sackcrete (hence the 400 Lbs per slab). Now I wish I had taken picture of the fabrication process to pass along but it was pretty straight forward.

Billboe, this Olympus camera came with something called "Camedia Master 1.2" and I use that to make most of the adjustments to individual pictures, then use Microsoft Picture It! Photo Publishing to make the collage.

Bird,

I use the same software and have been fairly happy with it. Have you used the "Instant Fix" feature? When taking pictures indoors there is often some undesirable color shift. Using the menu choice Image/Instant Fix really corrects the colors nicely.

Yep, I use the "Instant Fix" first thing on every picture; whether it needs it or not./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif And I'm sure you can guess that most of mine do./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Very interesting, Taxman. I hadn't seen such a chart before, although I knew the frequency depends on a number of factors, including tank size, volume of water, whether or not a garbage disposal is used, etc.

We built a block septic system like that for my grandfathers place before he sold it. It is a nice system and fairly easy to build, I haven't checked the prices recently on precast tanks but back then it was cheaper as this was about 12 years ago. It also didn't require any heavy trucks to unload a precast which is a good thing because of where we put it. You can still get info on how to build block tanks but I can not remember where but local building inspectors should know.

Heck, Bird, I think you just graduated. /w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif

Harv, you definitely have some competition!

I'm not about to tangle with the likes of Bird, Bill.

The good news (for me, at least) is that Bird is no more competitive than I am. The mere fact that we're able to sit in our cozy homes and see each other's septic tank lids over the wire is amusement enough for both of us.

I'm sorry (well, not very, really) but, as a huge Andy Griffith show fan, I just gotta ask: Does anybody besides me think one of their funniest clips is the one where Barney is saying the car he's buying is his biggest purchase since the anniversary present he got for his parents? Andy says "Whadja get 'em?". Barney: "A septic tank." Andy: (gives Barney a strange look) Barney: "Well, they're really hard to buy for. Besides, it was something they could use." Andy: "You're a fine son, Barn.

This thread has reminded me of that scene from the beginning. (Excluding the fact that it also reminded me that I'm going to need to be doing the same thing soon.)

I don't remember that one, Mark, but that does sound like Barney, all right.

And can anyone imagine me competing with Harv where computers and cameras are involved? I guess that'd be like a junior high school football team taking on the Super Bowl champs - and it ain't hard to figure out which one I'd be./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

But as he said, Harv & I are easily amused and entertained. Come to think of it, maybe we ain't so different from Barney./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Bird - Speaking of football, I remember an occasion when I was about 15 and I was with a bunch of guys at a local school football field on a Saturday afternoon horsing around in a informal game. We didn't have enough guys to have a real good game, so we were glad when a bunch of guys showed up and asked if we wanted to play a game of "friendly tackle". We were a little surprised that we didn't know any of them, because it was a small rural community, but we agreed, even though they were a lot bigger and older, on average, than we were. In about half an hour, they'd scored umpteen touchdowns, we'd scored 1 on a fluke play, and they had just about killed us. They ran around us, ran over us, trampled us, you name it. Turned out that almost all of them were members of the varsity high school squad from a school in NC (I lived about 10 miles north of the state line) - where they had finished as runner-up in the state championship game a few weeks before. Moral: Know thy enemy, or die.

We're building a new house, and when the guy installed the septic tank (2500 gallons and 1500' of leach field - all this for only 2 old people), he told me the secret to having a healthy tank. Every month mix 1 cup of brown sugar, and one package of yeast together with a little water to make a slurry. Then flush it down the toilet. This will promote the growth and happiness of the little bacteria that eat the poop that keeps the odors down, and keeps your septic system working efficiently. He said if you do that, we will only need to have our tank cleaned about every 7-10 years (for our size tank and with just the two of us). Your results may vary.

That strange because the guy who pumped out my tanks said that yeast or the other additives you can buy for your septic tank are a load of crap (pun intended, /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif sorry!). He says that a couple of inches left in the tank when its pumped out leaves enough of the bacteria to keep the tank active. I can't see what yeast and brown sugar would hurt. I wonder if there are any scientific studys into the subject./w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif

Hi Mark,
I suspect like most opinions, the truth lies somewhere in between what both guys said. My septic guy said that the products that you buy to add to the septic system are just brown sugar and yeast, and if you are going to do that, you might as well mix your own at a fraction of the cost. Plus another thing that will plug up a septic system quicker than anything, is to dump your clothes washer water into the system without first filtering out the lint. The Rayons, Nylons, and other synthetic fibers will not break down in the tank, and will flow out into the leach field and plug things up.
I can hardly wait to have my tank pumped out for the first time. The local septic sucker will show up dressed in high heels and a red dress, which really goes good with his 3 day old growth of beard. I used to deal with this guy years ago, when he was still married, before he came "out", and as ugly as he was then, he's got to be a real prize dressed up as a woman. Gives me the creeps just to think about it!!

Say it ain't so, Joe! You've got to be joking. Aren't you?

The guys I know in the business didn't mention the sugar; just say flushing a package of yeast down a toilet once a month will do as good as all the additives you can buy.

You know that restaraunt in town that nobody can eat at without getting montezuma's revenge? Everybody's got one in there town, right? Why not go there, order the biggest badest meal they have and get it to go. Take it home and flush it down the system. It will probably do to your septic system the same thing that it does to you. It will clean it out everything!/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Isn't that more or less what you do when you eat at that restaurant anyway? That is assuming you make it home in time. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Hi Mark,
It's sad but true. This guy has a long face, with a chin that's more prominent than Jay Leno's, if you can imagine that. Not much to look at as a guy, probably scares little kids as a woman. Oh well, to each his own.

Plus you have the benefit of breaking it down so the microbes can get to work on it easier.
As far as making it home in time.........Ewwwwwww, I don't want to go there.
