Bird - Speaking of football, I remember an occasion when I was about 15 and I was with a bunch of guys at a local school football field on a Saturday afternoon horsing around in a informal game. We didn't have enough guys to have a real good game, so we were glad when a bunch of guys showed up and asked if we wanted to play a game of "friendly tackle". We were a little surprised that we didn't know any of them, because it was a small rural community, but we agreed, even though they were a lot bigger and older, on average, than we were. In about half an hour, they'd scored umpteen touchdowns, we'd scored 1 on a fluke play, and they had just about killed us. They ran around us, ran over us, trampled us, you name it. Turned out that almost all of them were members of the varsity high school squad from a school in NC (I lived about 10 miles north of the state line) - where they had finished as runner-up in the state championship game a few weeks before. Moral: Know thy enemy, or die.
