Re: Seatbelt

Yes there is a ROPS, but I'm not sure there ever was a seat belt--at least there's no evidence of mounts. Since I moved the tractor to our camp, I've become aware that the ground is much less predictable than I'm used to. I got to get serious about mounting the belts.

Re: Seatbelt

I can tell you how the Kubota mount, but JimBinMI will probably have to help you on this as he is our resident BLUE tractor owner. There should be holes if it was original equipment. Look near the seat or on the seat. I would not drill new holes in the rear axle castings, though. If you wind up having it tie it to the fenders, use large (2 in dia) washers on both sides of the sheet metal.

Re: Seatbelt

TomG, One of the design flaws of my B7100 (yep, JimBinMI, even Kubota messes up once in awhile) was the fact that the seat belts were not retractable and if they had been removed, there would have been no visible bracket. They simply attached to vertical bolts in the top of the transmission housing; one on either side, under the seat. So if you didn't wear it, the ends could fall down around the rear axle, and when you did wear it, it wrapped around the edge of the seat, so it wore the cover off the edge of the seat and wore the belt in two in less than a year. When I replaced it, I made some leather shields to go on the belt on each side so the edge of the seat wouldn't cut the new belt. Fortunately, the B2710 has retractable belts like most cars.

Re: Seatbelt

Bird,

The seat belt on my M6800 is really a nice retractable belt with the ends held at the correct position for hooking up the belt. Very similar to Honda automobile belts. I like the way it locks at every position when in use.

Re: Seatbelt

Sounds like the same belt as on my B2710, and it's sure a lot better than the one on the 1995 B7100, where you had to buckle the two ends together in front of you.

Re: Seatbelt

I'd LOVE to have a clunky non retractable seatbelt that buckles in the middle on our BX. That piece is a typical engineered solution using modern technology. The result, even with the seat back I have to twist around to fasten it and since it retracts so nice it usually retracts to a point UNDER the seat where half the time I have to get up off the seat to dig the darn thing out. If they are trying to promote safety theyre sure going about it the wrong way.

I too am a belt nut since the days when seatbelts were really rare, even installing better belts in vehicles, but my old flop over the fender when done Ford belt beats this turkey by a mile in ease of use. Just grab both ends of the Ford, snap it, pull as tight as you want and you're done.

I guess it's time for some home engineering.

And to the fellow that was going to put his own holes in, you won't be generating forces like a car accident can but be sure to use some backup washers and proper graded bolts for your mounts. (You probably were anyway...)

And to the comments about using a seatbelt on flat ground or not. I too am sometimes guilty thinking it's OK, and it probably is. I remember hearing about a local fellow that was just tooling along not that fast on safe ground. loader was dropping slightly (hey we're back to the leak down thread!) and it caught a rock or something and he went forward hard enough to break his ankle when the tractor stopped and he didn't.

Some of the times you need the safety stuff are the most unlikely, unimagineable circumstances.

Dig on...

Re: Seatbelt

Del,

The seatbelts on my M6800 are just right at the correct location for easy buckling and retract within easy reach. Guess Kubota learns something every year. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Seatbelt

Del,

My Massey didn't have a ROPS or Seat Belt (or brakes) /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif When my son was mowing in High Gear he hit a bump and the front axle casting broke dropping the front end of the tractor to the dirt and stopping instantly. He said he felt like he was going to keep going, but he did not get thrown off. Yes, I believe there is a good reason to wear seat belts and keep the ROPS up at all times. Just cut a big U above your garage door and it will drive right in. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
