Servicing a Deep Well

Been many years since I was helping pull a deep well pump that used 20 foot sections of galvanized pipe maybe two inches in diameter or so. We used a backhoe to pull up the pipe and secured it with some kind of clamp as we regrouped to get the 20 foot sections up far enough to unscrew. I cannot recall what that clamping device was. The pump was maybe 275 feet down but I may be off there. Took some time it did!

Again a while back I was helping a contractor friend pull a 400 foot deep pump that used plastic tubing. We had a pump puller which sits on the well casing and uses three wheels to pull the pipe/pump. Takes a lot of help to handle a big "snake" like that and to protect the plastic clips that prevent the pipe from rubbing the electrical wire.

Do yourself a favor and rent an UP-Z-Dazy, they are available at rental yard for about $100/day (see link below for example). Best money you will ever spend. I'd also just think about replacing that pump with a submersible. I doubt that piston pump moves a lot of water, and the submersible would be much more reliable.

X2!

When our well pump died, the well company came out and used one of these. I'd never seen one before. Worked great. Our pipe was plastic, so they just layed it out across our fence, yard, driveway,. the neighbor's lawn.... as it came up the hole. Pretty neat.

Note: from the pictures I have no idea how that pumpjack works!

Loosen up the pump a bit & lift a half in or so. Then you can see what is inside for tubing and sucker rod as well as the weight. After that you can decide on an action plan. ( flashligh

A sturdy tripod and a chain fall have pulled many a rod water pump. Just make sure the down hole string is well secured by a pipe clamp when removing lengths of tubing. ( tubing clamp below coupling and restin on the casing ) make sure there are a +outlet of sledge hammers and longer pieces of pipe to slip over pipe wrench handles. Steel pipe wrenches, not aluminum. You can get fittings that slide over the tubing for lifting. They come in real handy when the joints are longer than the tripod.

Leave the tractor parked in the garage! It just isn稚 set up for this type of work.

Just remember I知 Talking of things from seventy years ago!

Around here the well guys all seem to have a large reel that the wrap the poly pipe and wire all at the same time.
Kind of like a big drum winch about 3-4 ft in diameter.
Generally it is trailer mounted and they have an adapter that has a 12" or so wheel that sits atop the well pipe. This wheel (like large pulley) allows the operator to pull sideways in whatever direction.

One operator has his pulling rig mounted inside his cube van (along with water tank, welder and assorted hardware and tools). He is very efficient and popular.
When he drills a well he comes with his huge drilling rig and the cube van.
Most wells run 3-400 ft and he is in and out same day most often.
He is the one guy that drills year round no matter how cold as his truck is garaged and the water kept above freezing.
As you know the drilling rigs need water to operate.
I've hired him 3 times now and was always very satisfied.

If you end up replacing the pump, one alternative would be to use a Brumby pump. I didn't know just what one was, but here's a video that shows how they work:

Growing up in Texas, we got our water from a neighbor who supplied all the homes in the area. He used compressed air to pump the water. Never knew how it worked, but am guessing it was similar to the Brumby pump.
