Buying Advice Setup Charges?

   / Setup Charges? #11
My stuff hasn't been delivered yet cause half of it hasn't come in, but have been told by my salesman that he will deliver the stuff at no charge and even give me a quick demo on how to use it. Personally, if I had a trailer that would carry it, I'd rather go get it myself.

I, too, hate after-the-quote add-ons, and advised him twice before the quote to "make sure that's everything. I don't want any of this 'oh and by the way' crap once the goods arrive."

Look guys, don't want to start an argument, but there is no free lunch.
The office girl has to be paid, the delivery truck purchased, fueled and insured, the driver paid, the mechanic in the back gets paid to un-crate and assemble. Believe me, we pay for all this, one way or another. Those of you who are business people know all this very well.

What just hacks me, and I am sure most others is this:

OK, mister dealer, I know you have all these expenses. I understand that. When I ask you to give me a quote, put all the stuff in there, in your pricing. That's all fine and good and I shall expect the next quote to compare from another dealer to include his expenses in his profit margin too. I'm not stupid. BUT... Buddy, when we agree on a price, I sure as heck don't want to suddenly have all these nifty nicks start appearing, as "oh, and by the way, there is charge for......" No sir. Give me the out the door price, once and for all. That way, the next quote I get, or if we agree on a price, that is THE PRICE. End of story.

I don't expect "free" anything. I do expect that what the price is, is the price. I have walked away from signings on cars, trucks, boats, etc over stuff like that.

Well said. I value my dealer and the people that work for him, I expect to pay them a fair price for their services just as I expect my customers to pay me fairly for my services.

What bp_flick said. When buying big stuff, just ask for the bottom line out the door price, then you just don't care and can compare with anyone.

Get the quote in writing.

Be prepared to put the check book away if they change anything, and tell them up front that's what you'll do.

you sure this salesman isn't a former car salesman? if he mentions "rust proofing" you better run!

as others have stated, i'm no fool when it comes to knowing the dealer has to make money. i do want the rock bottom price he can give me the FIRST time, and i expect that to be that when we agree on a deal. not adding onto it latter, nickel and diming me to death. car salesman tend to have a reputation for this, never heard of too many tractor salesman doing this.

All of my setup charges were negotiated with the deal. Dealer said loader was mandatory for liability? Not sure if that is true or not. But all the rest of them I declined. Last year I purchased a 55 gallon john deere 3pt sprayer. I would have probably been money ahead to have them put it together. Not tough, just time consuming.

As long as the dealer shows these prices up front I see nothing wrong with it. This is exactly how we do it at the dealership I work for, especially if the dealer is using the JD quoting software. I show the customer what freight is, what setup cost and we once we agree on a price that is it, no other add-ons after that.

Now if I have something priced on the lot and tagged then that price includes setup and all freight.
