Oh man that happened to me at freeway speed, in about 1962. I was driving my employer's IH Scout (Jeep-like body on Jeep running gear), rated quarter ton capacity. The tiny bed was full of stuff for our surveyor field office in Squaw Valley, transit tripods etc, didn't seem overloaded. I pulled up the hard grade past Auburn on I-80 and suddenly the right rear axle snapped outside of the wheel bearing. First, the tire wedged upright under the quarter-panel behind the fender, putting me nose-down and skidding at 60mph then it fell out and I skidded along on the chassis, no brakes, didn't make it to the shoulder before I stopped in the traffic lane. I put it in 4 wheel drive and dragged the crippled thing off to the shoulder. It'll be fine!

The whole event was so fast and unexpected that it scared the h*** out of me. Then the boss thought I somehow caused it, gave me h***. I wasn't the one who overloaded the little Scout! I was just told to drive the stupid thing!
