Oh man that happened to me at freeway speed, in about 1962. I was driving my employer's IH Scout (Jeep-like body on Jeep running gear), rated quarter ton capacity. The tiny bed was full of stuff for our surveyor field office in Squaw Valley, transit tripods etc, didn't seem overloaded. I pulled up the hard grade past Auburn on I-80 and suddenly the right rear axle snapped outside of the wheel bearing. First, the tire wedged upright under the quarter-panel behind the fender, putting me nose-down and skidding at 60mph then it fell out and I skidded along on the chassis, no brakes, didn't make it to the shoulder before I stopped in the traffic lane. I put it in 4 wheel drive and dragged the crippled thing off to the shoulder.

The whole event was so fast and unexpected that it scared the h*** out of me. Then the boss thought I somehow caused it, gave me h***. I wasn't the one who overloaded the little Scout! I was just told to drive the stupid thing!

It might not have been overloaded, probably a bad bearing or other part.

For the overloaded pickup:

Average pickup capacities. Someone else can calculate the weight of the sand and blocks.

I'm not a block person, but a yard of sand can weigh a ton or a little more depending on moisture. Or a lot more if really wet.. :)

It's about 1120 lbs of block. 40 blocks @ 28 lbs each. Pretty near a full load for the truck on it's own

I am in the sand industry
Most silica sands bulk density is around 90 to 96 pounds per cubic foot
Like sound mentioned, moisture fills the voids and increases it

Rounding numbers to make things easy, 18" deep box, 5' wide and 6.5' long is 48.57 cu ft. So and easy 5000lbs of sand plus the 1120 of block. No wonder the poor 1/2 ton truck gave out
