I always need gasoline for my equipment and drive a van with a factory 34 gallon tank.

Twenty five years ago I added an aux pump with selector valve and can easily fill my generator, mower, splitter from the 34 gallon truck tank... works like a charm.

The only reason I did it at the time was I HATED smelling gas fumes inside the van... and it has been well worth the expense.

I guess I'd suggest that he could transport them empty and fill up wherever he is traveling to. That would be safer.

If he is on a trip and simply buying gas where it is lower priced, he is jeopardizing the traveling public to save a few bucks.

Hmm.. Dot doesn't agree. They say the 5g cans are legal. In fact 135g in a tank would need a plaque, but 27 5g cans is fine.

When I G out of state to grab a tractor, I usually have 5-6 5g cans with me. All diesel, except one gas..the gas one usually for the tractor I'm after. Have seen plenty of people sell tractors but have no gas in it

The diesel is for the truck. More than one occasion I've found places with no diesel, and 20g in the bed made the difference of making it to the next town or calling a service...

How does DOT feel about 2 fuel cells of 105 gallons each? I was under the impression that 110 gallons was max total, not ok if separate containers, just 110, no more, period.

I ask because a friend of mine voiced some concerns when his employer asked him to take a pick-up truck with 2 tanks of 105 gal/each to a job site. He does not have his hazard material or tanker endorsement on his cdl, and didn't want to jeopardize his license.

Hmm.... Maybe there is a "DOT approved" idiot born every day that would carry that many GAS cans on their bumper.

Carrying a lot of gas in any type of container on a motor vehicle is always a tad risky. What safer way can you think of to transport gas? I presume this guy doesn't carry it around every day and has some need (? stocking summer cabin, ? gas for boat, ? gas for generator) so he has to move 30 gallons of gas somehow.

I'd certainly rather have the gas outside the vehicle for any number of reasons. Roof rack might be a tad safer but hitch mounted rack is more practical. Big red containers are a pretty decent safety alert to following drivers to keep their distance too. And, if a fire does break out at least the fuel is outside the vehicle. I'd do it the same way.

Maybe it was hinted at but what if they were used for water? I routinly fill many with water and have them inside the car.

He was right.
