He probably wanted to get them off the freeway. Driving at 35 is impeding the flow of traffic. Chipper should not need a plate, just a SMV sign.

Just noticed autocorrect changed Splitter to Chipper... the item towed was a very small Splitter.

Any towed implements on a public road behind a licensed vehicle need tags I believe. Would have been fine on a side road behind a tractor, but not a truck.

That varies by state,,,
In Virginia, ANY single purpose trailer does not need tags,
Items such as wood splitters, air compressors,,, etc are included.

The rental places are loaded with stuff like that, high lifts, steam cleaners, stump grinders,,,
all with no tags.

No... not without ramps or loading dock.

But one of the 3 should have had enough sense NOT to drive on the freeway... truck was set up as a landscaper's truck so being a business makes it worse.

Most definitely impeded morning commute traffic... and being in a city there are always plenty of surface streets.

I could easily envision make a hard turn it hitting a bump at speed upsetting the trailer...

NY is the same way. Here, that also includes tow dollies, cement mixers, etc. The caveat here is that you cannot store anything in it (ie: no toolboxes built into or on the trailer unless they are empty) or it has to be plated.

I just added the 50 gallon tank for diesel. (TSC had a 15% off anything day,,, I was hooked :thumbsup: )

The tanks are bolted down.
No lights, the only plate is a Farm Bureau Insurance "Farm Use" tag.

Hauling something wrong: some guy brought back a utility trailer loaded with gasoline he had bought cheaper in Texas.

He was doing maybe 45 on the freeway and got rearended by a semi.

Miraculously a little Honda that would have been crushed between them saw the semi coming and ran off the road at the last moment. No major injuries.

You better hope a VA State Trooper doesn't ever stop you. It's legal to haul diesel in those type of tanks, but not gasoline (or anything flammable). They come down on people hard for that sort of thing in my part of the state. There's probably a tag or sticker on the tank with the regulations, so you won't be able to claim you didn't know.
