Unless you overload a hitch component or tow vehicle I think the more tongue weight the better. I know the recommendations are 10-15% for tag and 20-25% for GN but exceeding that will not make the trailer handle badly. Too light of tongue weight though and look out.

That's my approach. I've never weighed anything, although I thought about it once. A little extra tongue weight is your friend and won't make a lot of difference unless you're towing near the limits and at speeds you shouldn't be towing at.

With a 3/4 ton trailer, 10% on the tongue means about a 150 lbs. If I can barely lift the tongue, we're there...

In the extreme it can matter. For lighter tow vehicles if you put too much tongue weight on a tag trailer the front end of the tow vehicle can get light and have similar tail-wagging effects as too little tongue weight. In general though I'm totally with you on erring on the side of extra tongue weight.

As a side note on bad towing:

I helped a guy push his fairly large (for MN lakes) 18-20' boat into a storage unit last fall. It was on a tandem axle trailer. When he popped the hitch release lever the tongue actually popped up off the ball, there was negative tongue weight. It was an ancient F150 that was probably at the very upper end of towing capacity with that boat anyway. I have no idea how he managed to drive it like that without having an accident.

I can barely lift the tongue if my single axle lawn mower trailer with nothing in it. I’d guess the hitch weight is 500 pounds with my mower on it which is a lot more than I can lift and a lot more that 10 percent.

Looks like truck has front end damage and struck other vehicle quite hard. Probably broke whatever tie downs were being used.

Not sure if my eyes deceive me but I see no chains only straps. This is why I Never use straps on any heavy loads!

Just passed local company today hauling a 30-35k excavator on a lowboy with no chains. I think he does it all the time. Not sure why, because I think he’s lost a machine off the trailer before.

How is this for a heavy load behind a pickup?

I don't know if it is "wrong" but it kinda seems like it.
