In the extreme it can matter. For lighter tow vehicles if you put too much tongue weight on a tag trailer the front end of the tow vehicle can get light and have similar tail-wagging effects as too little tongue weight. In general though I'm totally with you on erring on the side of extra tongue weight.

As a side note on bad towing:

I helped a guy push his fairly large (for MN lakes) 18-20' boat into a storage unit last fall. It was on a tandem axle trailer. When he popped the hitch release lever the tongue actually popped up off the ball, there was negative tongue weight. It was an ancient F150 that was probably at the very upper end of towing capacity with that boat anyway. I have no idea how he managed to drive it like that without having an accident.

I've had some equipment that was tandom axle. You could lower the Jack completely then remove it from the equipment. Tongue would float about 2ft off the ground. If the equipment was parked on a knoll, you sometimes had to stand on the tongue to get it to drop down low enough so you could latch it.

Equipment weighed 10,000lbs. Needless to say, with the tongue weight so light, the equipment so heavy, we do not pull it with anything smaller then a 1 1/2 ton chassis (F550 or larger). Which at work means it gets hauled with my F550 service truck that weighs 15,000lbs or the 20 ton roll back.

I'm intrigued, what were you hauling?

It is an IHI IC-45 rubber tracked crawler, a kubota 900x RTV, and a 10k watt diesel generator.

It is behind a F-450.

I would guess you were good on the truck axles but over on the trailer unless that is a pretty big dog trailer. On my 3500 dually Ram, if I max out my steer axle and rear axle and the pair of 12k axles on the trailer I am still just shy of 40k. Rarely do I haul over 32k gross combined, but I am tagged for 40k just in case I do that math wrong and get a little heavier than expected. We are running hydraulic disc brakes on the trailer and that makes for smooth stops.

The trailer has two 15k axles and electric over hydraulic brakes. Normally I haul this kid with my peterbilt and 53’ trailer but the jobsite we are heading to tomorrow is tight and I am not sure I could maneuver the semi in there.

That's a real-deal trailer for sure. Sounds like you were legal.

Care to share pictures of the rig? Jon

Sorry for the delay. Today I hauled the load about 200 miles to our job site. It handled it no problems. Cruise set on 70 most of the way. Once on the job site I had to go through some rough terrain to get where I was going which required 4WD. I unloaded the crawler before attempting it and had the crawler out front in case I needed a tow. Attached is a picture of the load.

Didnt get a pic, but saw a section on a sectional couch in the middle of the right lane today. And the pickup pulled over just a little further down.
