I get irritated at the sight of a bike rider wearing a helmet! When I was four or five, riding the biggest tricycle that Canadian Tire sold, I had a rope and maybe ten ton hook wrapped around the handle bars. Long story short, going at a good clip down grade on a concrete side walk, hook goes into front wheel spokes, I go *** over tea kettle, head hits concrete, blood everywhere! No ER visit. Walk it off!

What's with these bubble wrapped people?

Yes, and with the mud pies and dirt we ate growing up, our immune systems were very active and are still keeping us safe today. Fresh air, dirt and plenty of exercise were our lifestyle and we were happy.

I remember casting lead on my Moms kitchen range. My father even brought home lead truck weights, which he got for free.

A friend borrowed a huge jar of Mercury once from the Science Lab. I wonder where it all ended up?

I also made many pounds of gunpowder in the basement.

And my sister and I took turns smelling the gasoline in the car. Not to get high, we just liked the smell. My parents, just amused, walked away!

When I was a kid, we used to play "guns" or "army" all the time. When my son was young, I had to go bail him out of jail at his day care office one day. He was playing guns outside with another kid using there fingers as pretend guns. The director said she just doesn't like guns. I bit my tongue and resisted the urge to say I don't like you.

Yep I would be switching day care providers as fast as possible!

I go the other way. Without a bicycle helmet I would have been dead 35 years ago.

Teenage driver comment was: "I didn't see him until he broke my windshield".

My comment seeing her start the left turn: "Awe Fu..."

I'm so old that when I was a child, I didn't even have a cellphone or pager for my parents to get ahold of me.
Got on my bike & I might ride to a town 15 miles away. Even drank water out of the hose & didn't die.

Being a kid riding around on a bike is a little different than a baby crawling out under a fedex truck.

Around here the law says cycle helmets are compulsory. For all our group rides we always insist on floro jackets too.

I didnt wear a helmet either as a kid, riding only on the farm with a single speed bike. But riding on roads, going much faster on multigear bike i wish i had bubble wrap with the helmet.

I didn't wear a helmet riding bicycles or dirt bikes as a kid. Was it risky? Sure. But life's a risk. I'd probably wear a helmet for dirt bikes these days, but definitely not for a bicycle.

Being careful is well and good if you want to do it. However, in today's world we are far too obsessed with forcing people to be as safe as possible and that leads to many other problems. I say that we teach people common sense and personal responsibility and then let them make their own decisions.
