I'm a California native. I have no problem with motorcyclists lane splitting. I think it makes me a more vigilant driver, I'm always watching my rear view mirrors watching for them.

Are they stupid? Yes, most of them. Do I consider it a danger to me in my car? No, not really. Are they likely to get themselves killed? Yes, so what?

And no, it is not the car drivers fault if a motorcycle runs into you while lane-splitting.

I'll put my hand up. I was a lane splitter each day to and from work. I had a 30km commute and there were 3 or 4 choke points. I found it difficult to keep my balance when the traffic slowed down to a crawl.
Gave up the motorbike years ago nd now it's an Ebike. Which I ride on the footpath (sidewalk) There has been some talk of allowing children under 10 and senior citizens to ride on the footpath.

Even if you open up your car door to spit or pour your coffee out? :D

I've done lane splitting while visiting California, but only when the traffic lane was choked up to a standstill.
Nervous? You Bet.
Smart? Probably not. Certainly not something I recommend for moving traffic for sure. However, many riders do, with known risk.
Liability is on the biker unless deliberate harm by the auto driver is intended. That'd be hard to prove, but it does happen.

None-riders cannot imagine how hot it gets sitting out in the sun (no a/c on bikes), waiting for traffic to move. Or how nervous one gets with cars running up behind you, barely being able to stop before pounding you into the rear of the car in front of you. Riding bikes is dangerous - pure and simple. But there are many great pleasures in doing so. I wouldn't take any amount of money for my past riding pleasures and experiences. So far though, Lady Luck has smiled upon me.

From
Lane splitting general guidelines

California law does not allow or prohibit motorcycles from passing other vehicles proceeding in the same direction within the same lane, a practice often called "lane splitting," "lane sharing" or "filtering."

Bruce

Why does it not surprise me that Cali allows such an incredibly STUPID act!
:confused3:

Or at least does not outlaw it

I know that there are exceptions but it is generally legal to lane split everywhere except 49 states. This includes the rest of the world.

I don't think splitting Lanes would be dangerous if it were done in a slow and controlled way. The problem I see in many YT videos is the idiots running 20, 30 or more mph up between cars and trucks. I've seen vids of bikes that look to be going 60 or do mph between cars.... Now that's all dumb.

Cautiously splitting at 10 mph while vigilantly watching for indications of cars moving into your path.... Reasonably safe.

Have you ever been in traffic and had someone pop up behind you with no warning?
Until you have you really have no idea!
