..........Lots of people have NO IDEA of how easy things move when being hauled down the road.
That's true, but those people should be allowed to make the decisions as to whether to secure a load or not. The proof is in the morgue.

No... actually (as you know) the overwhelming majority of times NOTHING happens and when it does it is rarely fetal.

I never understood why people that make mistakes or have accidents often get punished worse than Criminals who intentionally or without any regard whatsoever, injure or kill people.

Makes no sense to me either.

A lot of people drive drunk or distracted and nothing happens, but that doesn't make it right . And it is fatal not fetal.

I won't argue with LD here... as he said, it is 'rarely' fetal. I might even go a step further and say it is never fetal but I was was taught, never say never.

I will try to lighten this up and note that fetal accidents usually occur in the backseat of parked cars, although a truck bed is a distinct possibility.

For hauling motorcycles and ATVs both in my truck bed and on my trailer, I have a bunch of these straps, and really like them:

Amazon.com: PowerTye 1.5in x 6.5ft Heavy-Duty Yellow-Zinc Ratchet Tie-Downs, Made in USA with Soft-Tye and Carabiner Hooks, Orange/Black (pair): Automotive

1.5" wide, 1000 lbs WLL, 3000 lbs breaking strength, and carabiner hooks on both ends so they stay put.

The Carabiner Hooks would not work for most all of the strapping I need to do.

I picked this cylinder of MIG GAS up from a friend and had it rolling around in the empty bed of my truck for a hundred miles, despite attempts to tie it down or hook the cap.

Got it filled, and didn't want it rolling around on the return trip. Came up with this quick fix. Also allows you to grab it just a bit easier.

Yay or Nay?

Better than rolling around, ya. Much if any value in the event of even a minor issue, no. A decapitated high pressure tank will easily bust through a properly constructed cinderblock wall & several pieces of plywood (Mythbusters). I know it would easily decapitate a person after going through windows either from momentum or gas propelled. Really my welding cylinders are the most frightening thing I haul even with inert gas. There is no way I'd haul them without making sure they can't roll or slide. Ratchet straps can hold round stuff if you get em tight & properly rigged.

I agree, I would run a strap around the tank a couple times (one strap on top and one on the bottom), then hook it back on itself and strap the tank to the side of the bed so that it can't move, or at a 45 degree angle from one front corner to the opposite rear corner.
