Looks like some of the potholes that frequently exist for weeks at a time in center city Philadelphia. You see one that could literally swallow a small car, and wonder how the city hasn't already seen and repaired it.

Around here the reason for country roads in poor condition is there is little funding for road maintenance, this keeps property taxes low. Partly because the long time property owners want to preserve the rural feeling, despite suburban homes going in everywhere.Des Moines metro area has a hot-line that residents can call to report a pothole. It sounds like something all high populated areas could use.
