Soundguy,

No, it's definately a 5/16" hole for the shear bolt in my PTO shaft. The shaft has 2 mating flanges that extend out with the bolt hole in them. Both ends of my shaft are splined. I haven't looked it up but I think that a 5/16" grade 5 is comparable to a 1/2" grade 2 in shear strength. BTW, I find sometimes that the nut has backed off and the bolt is loose and I need to double nut it.

Both ends of the shaft are splined? I assume you mean at the tractor and gear gox.. and then there is an inline couple that has the shear bolt?

Go with whatever your manufacturer and your wallet say is fine.

I see that some cutters have a smooth gear box input shaft with a hole in it for a shear bolt but both my cutters have a splined shaft. With the smooth shaft I can see that there would be 2 shear points whereas my set-up has one.

My 2910 has the 8-2 standard gear tranny. I dont recall anything in the manual about feathering but I will look when I get home. I will atempt to show how my shear pin works (Get ready to laugh)

You're right that's an ugly drawing, did you use a crayon?
That's exactly what my shear bolt setup is. Let me go brave the rain a get a picture of mine.

Good enough pic.. I know exactly what you mean.

Check that manual. Do you have the oem blue/white cover NH manual?

No I bought the maual from somewhere I found on here. I think it is a copy of the orriginal but Im not sure. I have read it many times and dont remember feathering but I will give it a try, If it works I owe you an adult beverage of your choice. After all the tractors are parked for the day of course.:D Oh and 960 I cant play with crayons any more, mom caught me writing on the walls 40 years ago and took them all away. that was back when we only got about 8 colors to the box.

What year of machine is that 8x2 tranny on.

If pto the handle is roundish bar with a bend out away from the tractor and is an open design, with no guide.. then it is one of those things you just have to 'feel' while shifting.. that is.. you can feel whent he hyd clutch starts to load up. if it is the newer 8xs tranny and has a pto handle that is a piece of flat stock that is setting in a bracket and runs along a guide, that is the one that you have a better idea of where the pto starts to engage, as when the handle moves just out of it's cradle position is where the 1-2 second feather begins.. etc.. ) It's also a stiffer movement than the old style.

Let me know which style you have.

88 2910 series II . It has the flat stock bar in the guide with the indention in the guide to hold lever engaged. Ihave tried moving it slowly but never thought to wait 2 sec and then slide slowly. It does seem like it takes a sec or 2 to start turning after I move the lever.
