shear bolts B2782 snowblower

I just went to the dealer to buy some additional shear bolts. The bigger bolts for the auger are 5/16 by 2 1/4" and are #5. The owner's manual says these are special bolts. Presumably what makes them special is that they have a little grove about 1/4" down from the head.

The bolts for the impeller are #8 which is what the owner's manual states, nothing special apparently.

For those of you who say they are too hard for this job, I can only say that I have had 3 auger bolts shear and one impeller bolt shear and they did their job perfectly. They are very easy to replace, now that I have had some practice.

8 auger bolts, washer, nut and 4 impeller bolts washer and nuts cost - $19.97

Pricey to be sure, but you know you've got the right ones at least.

I use cheap 1/4 inch bolts and Nylock nuts on my Luck-Now 52" 3pt snow blower behind my BX23. I'd much rather break the bolts than the next weakest link. I have a gravel driveway and, believe it or not, a dirt pasture / barn area.
I carry extras and the wrenches in my jacket and can replace them in about 2 minutes.

I sheared the grade 8 pin in the fan...4 pins cost $1.82 Canadian. Taxes in..

I can change an impeller shear pin quicker than anyone in the GREAT WHITE NORTH! That's because I have changed a ton of them!
Dealers, mechanics cannot solve this problem. I'm about ready to throw in the towel!

Just found this thread while search for information on how to disassemble the B2782 snowblower to sand and repaint the rusted parts. Anyway, when I first got my snowblower I was constantly breaking the shear bolts so I investigated what was needed and collected all the information about the bolts to make sure I did not use the wrong bolt which could lead to catastrophic failure if the bolt did not give before internal gears. Safety wire or bolt instead of shear pin. How strong/weak is the next shear pin in the drivetrain?
