Isn't T6 5-40?

yes, T6 is 5/40 "full synthetic". there are those who would argue their manufacturing process in calling it full synthetic, but i use it as such in all my engines from small to large. you can't beat the viscosity range in about any climate. & one of the best ones out there for price.... glad to see promotional rebates

You can also get 10w-50.

I use Rotella T6 in almost everything, from the lawnmower, to my diesel car, truck, tractor, and even motorcycles. It is one of the best oils out there at a reasonable price.

Thanks for the heads up on the rebate!

I just got a post card from Shell saying I did not send in my original receipt with my rebate form. It informed me to send in my original receipt along with the post card. The problem is I don't have an original receipt because I already sent it to them. :muttering:

I would worry a little about this. We're talking about 15W-40 diesel oil in a gasoline engine here, right? I would worry about the oil being too heavy for the small clearances in a modern gas engine. The higher oil pressure might be a direct indication that you are not forcing an adequate oil flow through the bearings. I've seen some concern about the very light oils (5W-20 or 0W20) now being used but I think the engines are specifically designed for those lubricants and I would not want to deviate from the manufacturers recommendation.
We are actually talking 5W-40 and I don't think there is any issue of tighter clearance with newer engines. The mfg. says use 5W-20 or 0W-20 for the small increase in gas mileage. This is done to meet the new EPA requirement for all cars. If they can get 1-2 MPG more from a small car engine, it gives them more leeway with the higher HP cars. I think EPA sets a threshold for all cars made by each mfg. in that all models combined have to average this set limit (I don't know what that is right now but I am sure Google has the answer). Anyway by spec really light weight oil, the engines will get better mileage. I don't know that this is necessarily good for the engine to run 20W in a hot engine. I would much rather use the 10W or 5W-40 so I know it has not thinned too much at operation temperature. I always use 10W-40 in all my engines unless they spec a higher viscosity. I know Harley Davidson spec 50W oil in their bikes but my Goldwing is 5W-30 or 10W-40 depending on the ambient temp.

The rebate offer is on the one gallon jugs. To get a five gallon pail of T-6 you will probably have to visit a Shell Oil Jobber in your area. I have never seen five gallon pails of T-6 offered at auto supply houses or Walmarts.

I purchased 4 one gallon containers. All four containers were on the same sales receipt. I filed the rebate offer on line and received one check for $5.00 if that helps in the decision making process.
Can you explain how you did the rebate online. I went to the Rotella.com/rebate site and it is just a form to fill out but it implies that you have to print it and mail it in. I would sure like to do it online without a trip to the mailbox or P.O.

It's been a while since I did this but I think somewhere towards the bottom of that form is a place to download a pic of your receipt. That's how I did mine anyway.

I got one of those post cards telling me I didn't do something right (I can't remember what it was) but I called the phone number that's listed on the card and they took care of the problem with almost no questions asked. I got my rebate check shortly after.

I submitted my rebate online. 3 gallons of T6, $5 rebate per gallon, but a 2 rebate limit (not sure what that means) so I figured I would get $10 but hoped for $15.00. I got my check the other day for $12.50. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be happy or disappointed.

Only those that really haven't looked at the details of various base oils like to argue that the base oil in the Rotella is not a "true synthetic". The differences between the Group III, Natural Gas derived base oils, and Group IV "true synthetic" is becoming very blurred. Details might be discerned in the lab, but no one out here in the real world is ever going to tell the difference. And the additive package of a motor oil plays as much or more of an issue than the base oil anyway.

Only solid thing to do today is select the brand that helps you sleep well at night, and look for promotional sales and rebates and stock up.

Group III "fake synthetic" vs Group IV "true synthetic"........
