Sometimes a container is needed to bypass zoning bylaws.
Al

This is so ironic.. no you cannot put a stick built building/shed behind your house but you can go ahead and put an ugly @ shipping container back there. Yeh, shipping container much better than Derrick J.

Derrick J. is my term for the "Builder" from Columbus who knows nothing about building at all.. he was a real person who said he was a roofer and completely FUBARed two homes (His and his mothers) on my old road. Moves to Morrow county because he knows there are next to no zoning laws.

All I could think when I drove past his and his mother's home was.... God have mercy on the poor people he actually convinced to let him do work on their homes.

The typical way to add windows and doors it to cut the opening, use a heavy gauge metal (not sheet metal flashing) to flash the edges, weld that in place and then use a finless or retrofit style window. The window or door is attached to the heavy gauge steel you installed. Apply sealant per normal and you are off to the races.

The condensation story is interesting. Was it in a climate that hovered around freezing all year where a few degrees inside and out would cause that. I don't see a metal container being any different than any other uninsulated structure. Unless it had some type of crazy seals on it.

Typically municipalities consider anything with a foundation a permanent structure- and regulate them. A storage container or shed on skids or piers typically doesn't qualify.

I live in Maine and have stored my 2007 Tacoma pickup inside a 20ft shipping container every winter since 2007 and never had any problem with condensation or any other moisture related issues inside the container.
Not only does it keep everything dry it's rodent proof too, which is more than I can say for my wood constructed garage.

A friend cut in half a forty foot, insulated it, put a hydraulic operating door (hinged up top) in the end along with a man door. Quite slick! He uses it as a hydraulic hose fabrication shop.

I have a forty foot for storage. If I ever got another, it would be an insulated reefer unit. My friend had quite a time insulating and sheeting that container.

Any chance of a photo of your friend's hydraulic door?

I will see, the next time I am there. The man just amazes me at his creativity and perfection.

I can't imagine having a wood-shop space that's only 8' or 8'6" wide.

One thing I've noticed with containers though is any decent 40' seems to go for about $2500+ plus transportation costs. For that price you can often find a running driving 60-72 passenger school bus which gives you similar space, and it's mobile. Just something to consider.

I paid $5500 for a double door, but there are no containers in my neck of the woods and so that drives the price higher.

That said, what ever container you get, get a high cube version.

We have zoning laws that forbid containers . A guy around here had one and neighbors complained and he had to get rid of it . So he read the laws and trailers are allowed , as long as they are tagged . So he bought a 40ft semi trailer and tagged it for 3000 lbs , the cheapest tags . He parked it in the same spot . It was taller and much uglier with advertizing on the side . The neighbor complained again , the zoning division wrote him a citation . He took it to court and won , the county code says "trailers" but says nothing about the size of the trailer .

A friend wanted a shop of a certain size. Not really very big. The town denied this but said he could build two smaller ones. So he did, got inspected, and joined them. Stupid!

Same with storage sheds. Fellow I know built a shed, bolted on wheels installed a tongue and lights and plated it.
The plate was only $40.00 and the city backed off.
