I ended up with 14’ walls to fit a 12x16 door in-allows me to get RV in as well as 580E, dump truck and some other large toy..tools. 14’ to bottom of trusses will allow for a lift to be installed (next big ticket purchase)

So your "porch" is going to be the same height as the building eave? So how does this space be effective for taller equipment?

Height definitely has a direct bearing on cost.

I'm probably not explaining it right. I plan to build a normal shop with 12 foot walls and a 10 foot tall, 12 foot wide door on one end. Then put an 10x10 roll up door on the other end because I already have it. The shop will have concrete floors and leanto's off of each side. Shop will be 30 feet wide and 48 feet long, plus the leanto's, which I will make as big as I can, but that will depend on how much flat space I have when I get to that point. I'm still removing trees.

So basically a 30x48 building with 12 foot walls, 4:12 pitch metal roof on wood trusses with a flat ceiling that I will fill with blown in insulation for the shop.

Then I will extend the roof line another 48 feet to create a covered gravel parking area for my tractors using these metal trusses. Metal trusses - farm & garden - by owner - sale

Figuring the roof pitch, the width of the roof and the thickness of those metal trusses, I should have over 15 feet of open space under the trusses. 14 feet gives me plenty of room to drive my backhoe into there.

I will have enough room to double this if I decide to later on, for 96 feet. Or I could go just 24 feet to start, and keep adding in 24 foot lengths when I have the need and the money. I will set a post at 24 feet and run a gluelam beam to support the trusses. Trusses will be every 8 feet.

I should admit that I've been working on this plan for a few years now and it's always changing. So this is my latest version of what I want to build and it could easily change a few more times before I actually start building it.

I have a class a motorhome. It requires a minimum 13' door. I put in a 14' door on the advice of my contractor. Many class c motorhomes will require a minimum 12' or 12' 6" door. The only rv trailer that will fit under a 10' door is an airstream. So if a motorhome/rv trailer is in your future (or for resale if that is a thought) is to go higher. Most doors require 2' clearance on the inside but there are some 'low profile' units that are a bit more expensive. One thing many people don't think about when building a rv garage is the angle of attack entering the building. I know a guy who put a 15' door on his garage to house his 45' tag axle MH that required a min 14' door. He shaved one of the a/c units right off the top when he drove it into the shop the first time as there was a slight slope going up into the building he didn't account for. He had to rip the entire end off his brand new building to put in a 16' door, not to mention buying a new a/c unit for his rv. Also think of how big an rv will fit in your shop. My 40' shop wouldn't hold a 36' rv and I had to make it longer. My 36' rv is 42' long with the tow package on the back plus I need a couple of feet to walk around the front w/o opening the door.

pretty sure that if you ever intend to put an RV inside you need at least a 14 tall door.
There are some bumper pull units that you may get away with a 12 door, but..............that is your call

On my new workshop storage building I have a 10ft tall x 16ft wide overhead door. It required a 18" tall LVL header. Plus I wanted the 10ft height to allow my B26TLB to be backed in on the trailer when necessary. Looking forward to your build and pictures. Jon

When you go 14' high you can use those commercial metal shelves like in Home Depo and have three layers of "floor space" to stack items out of the way. People seem tp always forget to utilize the height in an area. My building is 100x125' and I have three double rows of shelving giving me twice the floor space if not more as I have three layers of shelving. In order to have a clean floor space on needs to go UP with the things you don't often need or use.
