Over on another large forum, there has been a far amount of talk about these ebay light. LED Integrated Tube Light T8 4ft 1v-277v 18W 6K Pure White replacement 6w | eBay I went with them, I bought the 30 pack and used 25 at the time it was $209. I have 15 on one circuit, and 10 on the other over the bench. These pics are with my 60 dollar android crap phone, so they look kind of dim, but it is really bright! BTW, the walls are a gunmetal grey color.

Do you have a link to the ones you are using? Thanks

Sorry to jump in. This matches the part number he was showing in his picture.

Amazon.com: LE 55W LED High Bay Lighting, Super Bright Commercial Lighting, 15W HPS or MH Bulbs Equivalent, 48lm, Waterproof, Daylight White, LED High Bay Lights: Home Improvement

3000sf with white walls and lid. 8 lights at ~5000 lumens for a total of 40,000 lumens. As a reference a 4' T8 fluorescent bulb is ~3000 lumen.

Do you find you need task lighting as well with the 8 lights you have? I have a very similar situation and have been watching this post for some time now.
1 Watt LED High Bay UFO Lights -13, Lumen- Ultra Efficient 13 Lumens to Watts - Smaller and more efficient - Warehouse LED Lights - LED High Bay Lighting - High Bay LED Lights - - Amazon.com
I found these and was worried 8 wouldn't be enough. Maybe it will be based on your experience.

A little late, But I'd vote LED as well.

I just did my shop a few years ago, also 40x40x14' I have 8 HO fixtures, each with 6 T-8 4' bulbs. And they have the mirror like reflector behind them.

Then under my storage I have 4 4-bulb fixtures and above it I have 2 4- bulb fixtures.

So in total, with all lights on, I am burning 80 4' T-8 bulbs. All 5000k. (would have preferred 6000k bulbs)

Lights are the biggest power user when I am at the shop. 80 bulbs at 34w each.....2700w of juice. Down there for a 8hr day....thats about 22kwh for the day which is more than I would like for lighting. But all the fixtures and lights + about 300 spare bulbs was all free courtesy of work. We were replacing fixtures with ones that use a battery backup ballast to dimly light 2 of the bulbs when the power goes out. So they were tossing these, which is 100% of what our facility uses on the production floor. Got all the spare bulbs because we change them every 3 years weather or not they are burned out. So I saved some of the good ones.

Can get the same level of lighting with fewer watts with LED. And as cheap as they are becoming....they will pay for themselves in no time.

Just a few random old pics showing the level of lighting in my shop

If you dont have the ceiling height for "high bay" lights, I have these: LE 5W Super Bright Outdoor LED Flood Lights, 15W HPS Bulb Equivalent, Waterproof, 375lm, Daylight White, 6K, Security Lights, Floodlight - - Amazon.com $22 each (I bought at $30 each), I have them on a (approximately) 8'x12' grid ~12' off of the floor and they make things very bright in the barn.
I will go snag a couple of pictures and post them up.

Pictures as promised:

I had mis-remembered, the lights are in a 8x12 grid, not a 10x10 grid. I dont have lights on the "storage" side, but I will probbaly add one more row of lights to get a little more light in the middle of the barn.
