Well I stand corrected, it can be both diags short for diagonal cutters, or dykes, also short for diagonal cutters. I learned something, guess I'll clock out...

Dykes was a major plier manufacturer many years ago making all kinds of hand tools / pliers ( needle nose, diagonal and side cutters, etc ) and old timers starting calling pliers dykes just like we use "kleenex" to refer to facial tissues. Loss of trademark due to ubiquity.

Doesn't anybody know the proper name for side cutters is dykes?

I always thought Dykes are what I called lineman's plyers. I didn't think of them as side cutters because they do so much more than cut. There's a crimper and a crusher and a wirecutter

Dykes are short for diagonal cutters, an entirely different tool from side cutters.

I guess everything is regional but we call a tweaker someone who is strung out on meth, which is to say a meth user haha

Don't buy lineman pliers, buy rebar pliers. Longer handles, with a hook on the finger handle for pulling on stuff. Other than that, they're the same tool. If you want to use them as left handed sidecutters, you will have to swap hands, since you can't flip them over.
