Dykes was a major plier manufacturer many years ago making all kinds of hand tools / pliers ( needle nose, diagonal and side cutters, etc ) and old timers starting calling pliers dykes just like we use "kleenex" to refer to facial tissues. Loss of trademark due to ubiquity.Dykes? I thought it was diags, short for diagonal cutters.
I always thought Dykes are what I called lineman's plyers. I didn't think of them as side cutters because they do so much more than cut. There's a crimper and a crusher and a wirecutterDoesn't anybody know the proper name for side cutters is dykes?
We called cutters dykes and lineman"s pliers LPs. A very small screwdriver is a tweaker.
Dykes are short for diagonal cutters, an entirely different tool from side cutters. Now I know I am gong to offend somebody but the official shop warning has been posted. Doesn't anybody know the proper name for side cutters is dykes?
Kleins or 9,sIn area, linesmans pliers are referred to as Klien's.
