Just to get in on the discussion, i work for one of the biggest hose shops in the country.
We carry gates, dayco, etc for hose, but also have import brands.
I have been doing it for going on 11 years and 99% of all the hoses i have made have been at least 30% cheaper than factory, auto shops or other stores. For the most part, these other places buy from us anyway and then mark it up x amount.
If someone was to come in, we definitely try to educate them (as much as they'll allow) about fittings and whatever they are trying to do with it. Usually just where jic and sae will interchange, where it won't, not to use sealants on boss, flared or swivel fittings, etc.
The internet is a great resource for low cost hose and premade assemblies, but not all materials are made equal nowadays. We are seeing lots of defects and failures from low quality hose on a daily basis that we have to fix.
Brand names are becoming imports as well obviously, but i can assure you that the big brands like dayco, parker, aeroquip and gates will last much longer that low quality hose and fittings.
For the most part, our prices are cheaper than even internet pricing, apples to apples. Our gates hose would be a higher price than our generic brand, but our generic would be cheaper than online.
The half inch hose you got, 12 feet long with male pipe each side would have been approximately 45 bucks, give or take. The same thing in our generic (which is actually dayco brand) would have been roughly 25 bucks.
If you had come to me, instead of giving you a hose with male pipe each, then using female pipe by male o ring boss with a swivel, i would have given you a male pipe by male jic adaptor and a male o ring boss by male jic adaptor and made the hose with a female jic swivel on each side.
The hose with these 2 adaptors would be cheaper than going with male pipes and the oring boss swivel adaptor, as well as being easier to replace and easier to install. Most places that can do hose can make female jic hoses, not all will have that o ring swivel. Plus, the jic is a better seal.
Make sure to not overtighten the boss thread adaptor, hand tight and a quarter turn.
Sorry for rambling, just an interesting conversation.
