Should I buy the JD X729 ? help..

   / Should I buy the JD X729 ? help.. #11
If you plan on working the tractor, as in Mowing, snowblowing, pto work, then get the Diesel. I have a X475 which is the same machine but has 23HP gas engine. It is a great machine, but the gas engine is WAY off on power compared to that same Diesel I had in my 2210. Its night and day power difference, and fuel economy is soooo much better on Diesel. The Diesel smell was a non issue to me, but I do wear ear muffs for the noise (even on the gas engine).

I really do like diesel engines but was very nervous about the exhaust spout being in front and having to deal with the diesel smell as I am sure the gas would have a less offensive exhaust odor. What tires did you get on it, I would assume those HDAPS knobby type. Have you used the machine for cutting yet and if so what is your opinion ? Do you think it would pull a huge roller (600-800 lbs)

Thought I would mention how much I love the HDAP tires on my unit. They give good traction in snow and improved traction on grass and dirt over turfs. I also understand that the HDAP tires give a slightly softer ride.
As for roller operation I pull a 900 lb roller on my hilly property with my 2210 which would be very little different as far as weight and power to a 700 series.
Also these diesels really don't smoke much and the driver will not llikely smell it. I am very glad to have a fuel sipping diesel in these times of high gas prices, the diesel will use so much less fuel than a gas motor in these units. you'll save many trips to the station with gas cans too.

I have a 740 and before that 595, 455 and previous to that some gas ones 420, 318, 285 and so on. All the diesels ran super, and cheaply compared to the gassers. If I start a diesel in the garage, I will get a little diesel smell but once I take it outside, I never noticed it in probably 13 years. Tractors are burning diesel so clean now, you will be glad you have one. I would not go back to a gas garden tractor.

I am seriously considering buying the JD X729 but would really like to hear from other owners or people that have experience with the unit and advise if it is truly a good machine in all respects. Can I expect to get years and years out of it or will I have breakage issues. Also the 4wd & 4ws.... are they what they are cracked up to be. Will I have scuffing, rutting etc.
1*And lastly, for this large sum of money should I be looking at other brands/models.
I have 3 acres to mow and plan on pulling a very large roller (800+lbs) and large cart filled with wood as we run a tree service so I thought the 4wd & 4ws would be the way to go. Will the transaxles hold up ? Look forward to hearing back from you. Bernie, 518-399-1572 and bkuczek@nycap.rr.com are my phone & email. thanks
1*I would look at the Kubota BXs more tractor less money in most case usually .

2*I really do like diesel engines but was very nervous about the exhaust spout being in front and having to deal with the diesel smell as I am sure the gas would have a less offensive exhaust odor.
2*That' is not a problem .
Once you get hold of a diesel you'll never go back to a gasser.

3*might want to step up to a sub compact.
3*Especially a kubota BX.

I've owned the X585 and the X748.
4*You really want the diesel for both power and fuel usage, trust me. I am so happy I upgraded to the diesel.
4*I've never hard anyone say they would trade their diesel for a gasser.

5*I have the HDAPs and have no tuff tearing issues.
5*I prefer AGs.

6*My x749 puts a smile on my face every time I use it!
6*So do my 3 BXs.

[ouote.]
7*The diesel gives more torque, and better fuel economy, the difference I've experienced has converted me to diesel engines, not going back to gas for a tractor again. :)
7*No more gas garden tractors for me.

Nope, but Mr. Brown chimes in with the same story every time someone wants to buy a JD 700 series.

Bernie, get what you are comfortable with.
You are not going to notice any power lose with the gas motor.
The diesel in that series tractor is way more motor than it needs.
Just let us know what you get:cool:

My X475 needs more power to run my 47 inch Snowblower in real big snows. It handles it, but I have to slow down and let the engine catch up. The Diesel would do alot better job with this work.

I have first hand experience X585 (gas) vs X748 blowing snow, the x748 diesel has a noticeable difference in power for that work. The combination of the power increase and fuel economy is well worth the price difference and for a long term purchase of this amount I think the best investment. :)

I think anyone planning to purchase a lawn mower with a price tag of over $10,000 should at least consider the addition of the diesel. People who ask for information and opinions then have the ability to make informed decisions.

Having both an L130 gasser and the X749 diesel I can tell you the gasser uses alot more fuel.
