Should stores be closed on Thanksgiving?

Just saying that this thread is a prime example of what everybody is complaining about; its a first world problem. Were not complaining that we dont have enough to eat, or no clothes, or were dying form cholera... Were complaining because too many people have money and are spending it on what some take to be a semi-religeous, semi-sacrosanct day.

And dont be such a martyr, no one individual was singled out: its the tone and topic of thread. If you're righteous enough to be above reproach then you have no worries do you? What you give, how you live is your business and your charity is between you those who recieve it. The pious man gives without drawing attention to his giving.

I would argue that instead of bitchin about the perversion of the season, that we mobilize and actaully do something that is more in line with the tone of our concerns. All of us seem to be pretty blessed and could do something for someone this season that was beyond the annoymous charitable donation.

I know of a good organizaiton that could use some help: Crosses for losses or the Southern Baptist disaster relief. They could both use money, but morethan that they could use your manpower.
Do something that feels really good this Christmas: help someone.

What gets me is that on what was once an occasion for people to spend time with their family, now many people have to work so they can sell chinese crap to the type of person who would make them work on a holiday. Disgusting.

And yes, I realize we need to preserve the right to "be free" to make these bad choices.

Do you think the Waltons and other owners cancel their Thanksgiving dinners to work? Or is that just what they make other people do so that they can get richer?

Adventure Bob: if you feel this discussion is so worthless, why are you here? The rest of us would like to discuss the topic without you throwing rocks. Calling people you know nothing of "martyrs" is offensive. You seem like an unhappy person. Maybe the best thing would be if you unsubscribed.

And why in the world do you think we aren't already doing the things you complain about? You just jumped to a massive conclusion and basically painted the world black and white. If you want to have a discussion about those topics you think are very important, how about starting your own thread and pontificate on there. Thank you for your input.

It comes down to "You take care of your side of the street and I'll take care of mine."

I have never liked blue laws and/or Sunday closing laws except where liquor sales are involved. I don't go shopping on Thanksgiving or Black Friday, but it is completely my choice. I think liquor laws help keep drunk driving reduced, though that could be challenged. I just say that our government has no place enforcing closing laws on legitimate businesses that serve the public. However, I completely support anyone who wants to close on those days and still will be their customer when they are open.

My tractor dealership closes at 5:30 PM daily Mon-Fri and at 1:00 PM Sat, Sunday closed. Most others are the same. Those hours really keep TSC in business. I regularly shop at TSC on Saturday afternoon or Sunday.

My favorite Mexican Restaurant closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve thru Christmas Day. I don't mind that one bit. I'm glad they honor their employees with those days off, but other restaurants are free to do as they please. It's freedom to do as you see fit that ranks highest with me.

Western, that sounds like John Stuart Mill. Do what you want as long as you harm no one else.
I like it.

I sure will take that as a compliment, but sure would fall short of his accomplishments. It is a basic simple concept. Until it infringes or hurts another, (lasting consequences), or in some cases, ones self, then do what ya think works for you. With ever increasing regulation from Government and society (PC) individual freedoms erode. Is it for the good of the whole?? We will see.

Brick and Mortar retail stores are all hurting...minus the large pharmacy chains...

The ease of Internet shopping especially when free shipping is offered has cut deep into the pockets of B & M establishments...

Many times the most profitable (margin wise) items for walk in stores is found on the isle end caps and kiosks...if the foot traffic is not there to see and impulsively buy one or more of those high margin items...

IMO, even the electronic (etc.) specialty stores are going to fade away...their infrastructures will be redirected to distribution warehousing, packaging, shipping and counter pick-up outlets...

Black Friday and now T-day sales are a last gasp to get what they can when more shoppers are not at work or school...

This discussion reminds me of a 'discussion' I had at a VFW hall one night a few years ago.
The man was out raged because there was no more shoe industry jobs in Maine (he or his had just lost one of the last jobs left). And yet no matter how I tried I couldn't get him to connect the dots of him being in love with shopping at a place like Walmart and the job just lost.

This thread is exactly the same.
You lament the loss of community and yet shop at malls type stores or on line, thereby supporting the least common denominator. How do you expect to have a common sense of purpose if everyone in your community is shopping on-line and communicating with each other only via internet? How do you expect a thriving down town where you get to know and appreciate your neighbor to succeed if ya'll just shop on the internet or run to Walmart or the mall?
Cause and effect people, wake up!
