Nope, not abused. The underside isn't even scratched at all. Just been using it to move dirt from a large pile and dig trenches...stuff it's meant to be used for. Never been in a "field" with tall grass or hidden stumps. The short of it....nothing ever got near that shaft to "knock out" the pin.

PaJohn, then I've changed my mind and think your dealer should cover this. If he doesn't, then I would escalate the issue, first within the dealership. If that fails, then with Kubota.

I think I misunderstood the "spring pin" part of the original message, and was thinking of something different from a "roll pin" like the front "propeller shaft" on my B2710 had, and apparently the roll pin is what we're talking about, in which case, that thing ain't supposed to fall out and I don't know of anything that could hang on it and pull it out, so I'd have to say that should be under warranty.

Incidentally, the only time my B2710 went back to the dealer was because I sometimes heard a little "rattle" that I couldn't identify, so I got under the tractor, got hold of that drive shaft and tried to wiggle it around and found it had just a little slack in it. I then went to the dealer, got under a new tractor and tried the same thing and couldn't get it to move at all. So when I described the "problem" to the service man, he suspected that roll pin was missing; said he'd seen that before and didn't know whether it had fallen out or whether they failed to put one in when they assembled the tractor. However, they found nothing missing, disassembled the whole front driveline, re-assembled it, found no problem at all, but that corrected the rattle./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Only thing we can think of is if something got dirty, some little foreign material in there, or something wasn't exactly right, and the re-assembly made it right; still don't know. But anyway, it corrected the rattle and the dealer did not charge me anything for it.

UPDATE. Just picked up and installed the new universal joint and pin. After hammering the new pin into place I can honestly say that there is NO WAY the universal fell off from abuse or operator error. That sucker won't come out without a punch and a heavy hammer. If I had to guess (which I do since I can't find the original part), I'd say they forgot to put the pin in and the universal was just sliding around all this time.
Anyway, the dealer still said it wasn't covered, so I'm writing to Kubota.

I would talk to the management of your dealership. Hopefully they will override the decision of your service manager.

However, if they agree with Norman Einstein in the service shop then find another dealership fast.

Suggest you use your dealers head to pound the roll pin in,
then ask him if he thinks it fell out on it's own. He may change his mind.

If you are talking about a roll pin that looks like the attached file then they should be covering this no questions asked. That type of pin is not supposed to fall out. Did you see any evidence of wear on the splines of the shaft like it was loose for a long time? If so then I doubt it was ever in there to begin with. How old is the tractor and how many hours? I smell a rat !!!!!

pajohn,

Had a similar experience with my bx2200 at about 150 hours.

I was mowing and in the process of backing up when I heard a banging sound under the tractor. Upon inspection I found that the roll pin had backed partially out of the shaft and had sheared off. Part of the pin was still in the shaft. Just fixed it myself. I though it would be easier than going the 30 miles back to the dealer. One idea that I haven't applied yet but intend to is to safety wire the pin by placing wire thru the pin and shaft and twisting it together tightly and trimming off so to not have sharp edges. If the pin were to become loose again, which I doubt this time because it went in very hard, the wire would keep it from moving very much.

Yup, that's the pin. I really had to hammer the new one in so I really can't see how it could fall out. No evidence of wear on the splines. When I installed the new one, it looked to me like the front wheels needed to be off the ground to lower the front shaft enough to remove/replace the cv joint. My guess...there never was a pin and the cv joint was just loose but couldn't fall off until just the right time, maybe when I was operating the BH with the front wheel off the ground or back dragging with the front off the ground. Bought the tractor new in May. 150 hrs now. Still waiting to hear back from Kubota. Anyone know a number I can call?

Interesting Tom. Could be they had some idiot at that part of the assembly process?
