I agree with Budweiser John. Some specialties are better contracted out. Getting the building erected and closed in is relatively fast, and not the most time consuming and expensive part of construction.

the pit is plenty big enough for a boat in fact some folks have docks and boats they use on them. This pit winds around a good mile or so and averages probably 150 feet across and 25-30 feet deep.

Concrete will be contracted out. The actual raising of the building will be us doing the work. My wife is plenty capable, she's not fragile or helpless. I understand the concern but it just doesn't apply to her. She's far more knowledgeable in the trades than I am, she's done this kind of work before, so I'm not worried about it. I'll probably slow her down honestly.

My only real concern with all this is that we're not youngsters anymore and it does take a lot out of us sometimes and the time to recover tends to be longer. We're not going to know until we jump in and start doing it though.

Yes, I'd prefer to have a crew put the shell up, but these crews basically want to double the cost of the building to put them up. I've been quoted $140K to put the building up vs $50K for materials and I figure another $30K concrete. I don't see $60K in labor there, so I won't even consider paying that much.

Sounds like your place is near Big Brutus. That thing is huge.

Here, you can laugh at my LEGO house. The garage is half so 2000 sq feet, then another 2000 sq feet is the house. 3 bed, 2 bath, great room. 10 foot ceilings over the house. 12 foot over the garage. Garage has an office built in to the corner for me to escape from time to time. 2 cars, a boat, tractor, and tools to be stored in the garage. It's all connected. Slab on grade, zero entry, ADA compliant with 3 foot doorways everywhere. Floor will be stained concrete throughout.

Chim: I agree an porta potty or maybe even a custom built outhouse might be the first building to build. and so you don't need to tear it down how about down by the lake so you can use it later?

DD: in case you'd like to post your pictures either medium size or full size instead of thumbs I just learned how over on the Natures Photo thread that you might post up a few of your cool pics on while you read how the other members helped me. here's the link: https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/photos/418669-cool-nature-photos.html

if you like the thumbnails that's ok too cause we can click and have them full size, but thought i'd mention this to you cause I know I'll be watching your progress along with others and bigger pictures get more eyeballs.

cheers and again good luck

here's a medium size picture

god's way of saying have a nice day.jpg

Like the lego house.... but just one thing. The only person standing appears to be holding a sledge hammer.

Anyhow, looks good. Nice property, too. Good luck on your build.

Sledgehammer and a pirate hat. My wife built the lego house, maybe I should be concerned.

It sounds like you wife has a sense of humor. That in itself will come in handy. 25 years ago we built our own house and ran out of humor toward the end. We got it back though!
